Author Topic: Why do moderators here ‘lock’ threads that generate strong discussion, debate?  (Read 4452 times)

The thread “BREAKING NEWS: Marquette University to offer domestic partner benefits” has a lot of people posting a lot of viewpoints. In response, those in charge here think it best to throw a “lock” on it and end a good exchange of opinions.

I do not get it. This makes sense how?

I would think good moderators would encourage good debate here, not quash it.

because those types of threads can be found anywhere on the net.

This is a Marquette basketball forum.

If'n you don't like it, I suggest you look elsewhere.

I like MUScoop as peaceful as it is (ha!), if it started allowing all those controversial threads I'd be on my way out.

plus, they are NO FUN to moderate.

They put an end to political threads a couple of years ago because they didn't feel like moderating them.   It is their board, they can do what they want.    Mods, thanks for all of your hard work.   I love this site.

" In general, political threads are banned from this board"  per the disclaimer above.  Leads to not playing well with others, me included!

I don't really care one way or another whether they locked the thread, but at least get the quote right, "In general, political threads are banned from this board unless pertinent to Marquette."

You'd be pretty hard pressed to argue that the thread in question wasn't pertinent to Marquette.

The original topic was pertinent, the ensuing discussion was not productive.

To the original topic "Why do moderators here ‘lock’ threads that generate strong discussion, debate?" - it's largely a judgment call by us, and the "strong discussion" you speak of usually is just a couple posters internet fighting.  The specific topic you speak of, is a particularly divisive topic, which we do not enjoy moderating - and leave those kinds of discussions for other message boards and moderators....

Us, we have sweet 16 game threads to moderate today  :)

I had no problem with the thread being locked...and was a bit surprised that it lasted as long as it did.

However, do you really want whether or not a thread is "productive" to be the test for locking it or not.  If that's the standard, there's not going to be much going on here.

In seriousness, I think you guys do a great job and I really appreciate the work you Mods do to provide this forum.

Hah, yes I guess "productive" is a code word or mine roughly translated to: The thread was quickly becoming a flaming mess and insults were being thrown out faster than dirty diapers.

Maybe that's code too - but you get the point :)

ari, that was the bomb!!  except, they hate it when you call them liberal, so now they are umm, progressives.  it makes them feel so much better about themselves and their self esteem just shoots thru the roof

It's hard to discuss a topic when people start labeling you as something as they perceive as the ultimate negative.  It's as if there are two worlds.  Black and white.  You are either not liberal and good, or liberal and you are somehow bad.

You can substitute elitist, progressive, whatever.

There was a fine discussion of what is going on at Marquette, not the world in general.  People need to relax and not generalize that all people who disagree with you fit into a negative category that you have created.  Liberal, progressive or whatever is not a bad thing to be.  But, people have creative a negative aura around those words which makes no sense.

If you want to discuss a topic, don't name call.

This is exactly why we cannot have mature conversations about things going on at Marquette.

Ding ding.  - And that's from the guy who is the last holdout to allow politics.

In honesty, I yearn for an intelligent forum of Marquette people to discuss non-basketball topics.  Unfortunately, 3% of the people can ruin a forum like that.

Does that make me an inconsequential person?  Sorry.

Dude, I agree with this decision, disagreed with the O'Brien decision and believe in limited government.  Am I a teaparty d-bag too?

Superbar Topics
In general, political threads are banned from this board unless pertinent to Marquette. In the past those topics have dominated the conversation and we'd like this board be home to friendly water-cooler type discussions that relate to Marquette, and the Milwaukee area.

If you find yourself wondering where to discuss politics on the internet, just ask any MUScoop moderator, we'd be happy to help.
