Mr. Versatile - La Crosse Aquinas senior Scott Christopherson brought an eye-popping scoring average (22.2 points a game) to the Kohl Center this week, but that's not all that made the Marquette recruit stand out in his WIAA state tournament debut Thursday morning.

Christopherson might have surprised some fans with his athleticism, too. The 6-foot-2 guard not only scored 28 points, but also five rebounds, a blocked shot and a dunk near the end of a 51-41 win over Manitowoc Roncalli.

"It's something, being a kid from Wisconsin, a lot of people fight - and it's not just me," Christopherson said. "You're un-athletic until you prove otherwise. Whereas if you're from New York or somewhere like that, you're athletic until you prove you're not."

IAA boys basketball notes: Nankivil, others on campaign trail

Keaton Nankivil lost his first WIAA Division 1 state quarterfinal game in four trips to the Kohl Center, but Madison Memorial coach Steve Collins hopes the setback doesn't cost his 6-foot-8 senior a shot at being named Mr. Basketball in Wisconsin.

"He's lost eight high school games and three of them have come in this building," Collins said of Nankivil, a University of Wisconsin recruit who had 16 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots in a 49-46 overtime loss to Milwaukee Vincent. "I think it would be a shame if he wasn't Mr. Basketball."

All four candidates thought to be in the running for the honor - expected to be revealed today and awarded between sessions Saturday night - had a chance to state their case Thursday.

Vincent point guard Diante Garrett had 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals against Memorial after being held scoreless in the first half.

"He's an extremely special talent," Vincent coach Tom Diener said of Garrett, an Iowa State recruit who had 10 points in the third quarter when Vincent cut a six-point deficit to one. "I think he can go to the highest level. He really took that game over."

Oshkosh West guard Tim Jarmusz, a UW recruit, had nine points on 3-for-11 shooting in a 34-32 win over Milwaukee King. La Crosse Aquinas guard Scott Christopherson had 25 points but on 10-for-25 shooting and had five turnovers with no assists in a 51-41 Division 3 semifinal win over Manitowoc Roncalli.

"I'm just looking to win a state championship and do what I can to help the team out," Christopherson said. "If all that stuff comes with it, that's fine. If it doesn't, there are a lot of other good players in Wisconsin that deserve it." •

Christopherson's team, La Crosse Aquinas, lost the Division 3 championship game and their first game of the season 60-56 to Racine-St. Catherine's.  Christopherson missed a shot on a drive to tie with about 7 seconds to go.  He finished with 18 points on 6-21 shooting.

Too bad. Looking at this game and last game, he really struggled from the field. But he CAN shoot. I wish I can say that about DJ.
