But I'll take Ralph Willard . I kinda feel like a Kentucky fan . Are we stuck with this guy Tubby/Tommy for the remainder of his contract ? I think it's time for a tough New York type of guy to take control ala 40 years ago............

Pakuni

Ralph Willard???

Ask Pitt fans about Ralph Willard and the wonders he did for their program.

AlienWarrior

Pakuni ,Pakuni ,I think you'll defend TC 'till you pass on . At least you are consistent ,I'll give you that , having read your posts on this and the old board . Crean did help this program ,no doubt .I agree that next year is pivotal .

augoman

how much of that million plus will he give back to MU?... as he hasn't earned it yet.
at least Calhoun won 2 tournaments before he got that much.

Pakuni

Alien, Alien .... if you're going to suggest a replacement for Tom Crean, you're going to have to do a heck of a lot better than a guy in his 60s whose only experience at a major Division I program was a huge flop.

I won't disagree that I'm a huge Crean supporter. I am. He's done more for Marquette basketball than any coach not named McGuire. And, unlike some, I won't dismiss all the good he's done because of one unpleasant evening in North Carolina.

ecompt

Look, I'm as ticked off as anyone else, but TC earned his money this year. That contract mores than pay itself with the added revenue he has brought into the program. I was at the bookstore on the Pitt weekend and the MU basketball memorabilia was flying out of the store.
That said, if we're no better than one-and-done the next two years I will begin to wonder if the honeymoon will be over.

AlienWarrior

Let me sum it up , Crean may be a golden eagle , but a WARRIOR ,he's not

maxpower773

I don't know who the coach is you're talking about....but since when are we even able to liken our team to UK? This is a lot of people's problems.

muwarrior87

Alein, what planet are you from??? cuz i know it's not earth and you don't know much about Marquette Basketball. Crean has brought in more money than any single coach since Al. He's earned his pay this year and if he continues to improve this team and figures out a coaching style that works for him, he will continue to earn his paycheck!!

AlienWarrior

He is a PC person for a PC school .That translates into bringing money in . I could care less how many new buildings are constructed . We fans want a more competitive team plain and simple .Yesterday ,I wanted to know the exact nature of Jerel's injury and people on this board said it dosen't matter . Just accept that he is not playing and move on . My nature dictates that I want to know and expect more .

ChicosBailBonds

Alien, you better get a job as a coach then because quite frankly you are not entitled to that information about his injury.

AlienWarrior

Why shouldn't we know the nature of his injury . What if it is career threatening? When someone injures their knee e.g. we usually we get the specifics  ,like he tore his ACL,MCL or in the case of the Louisville player several yrs ago who tore his patella tendon in a game against us. We knew the nature of that injury immediately .

I have no idea what this means.

and for the record Crean has created more revenue for the school than anybody else.... and you should care about the buildings, faculty, staff, etc.

It's Marquette UNIVERSITY.... not just Marquette basketball.

I was keeping it secret because technically I still should due to confidentiality... but your bitching has to stop... my mom works at a hand surgery place... and Jerel came to their place, he had surgery on his thumb... there you happy?  goodness.

pure genius stuff by Bill Simmons, remember to read day 2

AlienWarrior

I'm questioning ,not bitching ,your language not mine .Why should I care about all the new buildings ? Did the university care about we alums when they changed our nickname ? I know ,I know don't bring up the PC nickname issue again ,so please don't attack me on that topic.

Virginia Warrior 77

Let's see - in 8 years as a head coach Crean has built a Top 25 program, at the top of the toughest conference in the country, including a Final Four appearance while maintaining the integrity of the program and recruiting players that represent the University well.  Al McGuire made his first Final Four in his 17th year as a head coach (7 years at Belmont Abbey) and his second (and national championship) in his 20th year.

Yes, that makes perfect sense - we should get rid of Crean and hire some retread who's never had more than mediocre success at a top school and who's never taken a team to the Final Four.  Or maybe we should bring back Bob Dukiet.

DoubleMU0609

There are few things that I have in my life right now that MU wasn't at least partially responsible for.  I cheer for the university as a whole, as does (I would guess) everyone else on this board.  Go cheer for the Bucks if the only thing you care about is basketball.

Hey 87 ,How did you guess that I'm not from the planet earth ? You must have superior intuition . Yes ,I'm from a planet where Warriors rule ,not money .

DJO's Pump Fake

Alright I could care less about all the money tommy boy has brought in and i could for sure care less about a final four coach that has hit a slump - tom is not a final four coach dwayne wade was a final four player

Tommy boy is a recruiter and a PR's dream, but X's and O's he is not and after 8 years it is safe to say he will never be.

last night after Cubillan single handedly shot us back into the game, did tommy create screens for him or try and run the offense through him, nope , he put him on the bench - smart tom real smart

the fact remains that multiple times last night the offense looked retarded.  I cant believe a coach that was tutored by tom izzo and has had a program for 8 years still cant figure out how to score points.  49 points in an NCAA game is an absolute disgrace and until he decides to go to a coaches clinic we will continue to see that stupid weave and a sub-par pick and roll attempt all year.  So buckle up we have tommy boy for 10 more years.

sure sounds like a UK like response to me

i am a realist where you are an idealist Alien. And no, money obviously doesn't rule the planet I live on because the University got offered a few million dollars to change their name back to warriors and it didn't work...I live in a crappy Politically correct society where FSU is going to be the only 'politically incorrect' nickname in sports in a few years unless this country figures out that political correctness is just plain stupid.

It all depends on what your reality is and what mine is .But that's a totally different topic of a philosophical nature . Good stuff.

ChicosBailBonds

Because you are not entitled to that information...PERIOD.  END OF STORY.  How much more simple do we have to make it.

If it was information they wanted out there, they would have released it.  Many of us knew about the surgery before the Big East Tournament and we kept it quiet because it was not publicly released.  If they wanted it public, they would have released it.

Agree with everything,  but where are we getting this misconception that the guy is a recruiter.  He got outrecruited for every big in the state, he has yet to land a Burger Boy, and he constantly tries to bring in these "Projects" that never pan out.  O yea he did bring in Wade, but that was because everyone passed on him.
Somebody of course is going to come on here and say that "Well Butch was Burger Boy"  Well guess what getting someone like Butch is a huge get despite the fact that he is not great, because it really amps up the team when they here that their coach is landing the best HS basketball players in the country.
The best recruit that Crean has landed was Wes Matthews, as he actually landed him over competition.

ChicosBailBonds

NateDogg

Christopherson just won Mr. Basketball earlier today.
I believe Merritt won that award.
Jerel McNeal was all first team Illinois
Dominic James runner-up Mr. Basketball Indiana
Wes Matthews I believe was runner-up Wisconsin
Mbakwe first team all-state
Diener first team all-state
Novak first team-all state (runner up Wisco?)

Etc, etc.   Crean has landed some nice recruits.  Definitely finished runner-up for some of the bigs, no one is saying likewise.

It's amazing that we are where we are....only a few years ago we would kill for 4 bids in 6 years (it's only happened 1 other time in the last 25 years)....and now that expectations are where they are (delivered by Crean by the way), now a 24 win season and a trip to the NCAAs isn't enough.
