10 minutes to Wapner...

Glad he's our coach.

"I don't know [what happened]," Holloway said. "I really couldn't figure it out."

That is the quote of the year for MU. What a great job.

During the Syracuse/ISU game, Buzz was sitting at the press table across the court from me.  Most of the time he was just watching the game, but there did appear to be times that he was studying something -- I'm sure some sort of stats.  My exact thought when I looked at him was that he looked like Rainman sitting there poring over the stats.

Benford was the scout coach for X.  Outstanding defensive scheme...best in years for MU.  All I heard before the game was how talented Tu was and how he was going to dominate MU, he was the best player on the floor, etc..  MU knew he doesn't create his own shots and just kept running different guys at him. Jimmy was superb. Still say JFB is an NBA talent and this game was proof of it.

Great article, Chicos, thanks for sharing. That was an absolutely dominating defensive performance. It was evident that they run their offense through Holloway, and simply didn't know what to do when he wasn't getting points. That, coupled with Lyons getting in foul trouble (so much for them being in the double-bonus in five minutes) left Frease as their only reliable scoring option. Really good scheme.

It looked like Kuykendall brought Buzz the Cuse Media Guide to look through.

Outstanding.  On the fly during the game, Buzz has room for growth still.  But in terms of pre-game prep, he's outstanding.  I point you to the ND home game and the Syracuse home game as examples.  When Buzz has time to break down a team and cut off their head, MU usually does well.

Couple that with outstanding recruiting and his overall tone and moral leadership, that's what I want in my coach.

Especially the "room for growth" bit. Buzz may not be perfect yet, but I think that in 5-10 years, he'll be one of the best in the game, and I don't want him going anywhere.

wyzgy

that was amazing, no wonder buzz always sweats thru his jacket during games.  his head must be smokin while going thru all those possibilities

Thanks Stone Cold.  Whatever the case...I'm glad we won last night, that Buzz can get the "can't win" with his own players monkey off his back, can't coach defense, etc, etc, etc.  Buzz is the real deal and since MU basketball is my favorite past time/sport/hobby....that's why I'm such a fanboy of Buzz...because I think he gives MU its best chance at continued high level success..

Jsglow covered everything relevant, so I'll just add.......definitely not my underwear.

Certainly this was the best defensive game for us. And it defines the intensity of Buzz's efforts whatever the situation. Williams is not the typical basketball coach we have come to expect. Many people try to compare him to other coaches but that's not him. I liken him to a diamond in the rough. In time he'll be that that brilliant finished product but it will take time to see the finished product. It's fair to criticize him for his current limitations but I believe we'll see him evolve into a coach that all Marquette fans can be proud of leading our students.

What I've seen from Buzz in terms of defense is very good game plans when we are trying to stop one specific player (e.g. Brooks, Walker, Holloway) and less so when our opposition has multiple threats, particularly if they have complementary type 3 point shooters.
