Top Players By Position -- GUARD
By Stephen Bernard
RotoWire Writer

The NCAA basketball season is set to tip off and as freshman and upperclassmen step onto the hardwood, here is a look at some of the top players at each position. The players listed will be relied upon heavily by their teams day in and day out. Some will be called upon to take the last-second shot with the game on the line and some will be called upon to make that last-second pass to the open man on the wing. One thing is certain about these guards -- they are all among the best in the nation.

POINT GUARDS

1. Ronald Steele, Alabama - 14.3 ppg, 4.3 apg
A 6-foot-3 junior, Steele has steadily improved throughout his career at Alabama. Steele can find the open man, but is not afraid to take a shot when he needed. Leave him open from long range and he'll beat you (41 percent from three-point range last year).

2. Jared Jordan,Marist - 16.1 ppg, 8.5 apg
A true floor general, Jordan rarely steps off the court when the clock is ticking. The 6-2 senior averaged a whopping 39 minutes per game last season. A sharp marksman, Jordan shot 48 percent from the field last year and 37 percent from the outside. But the key statistic is an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.5-to-1. Oh, and he chips in nearly five rebounds per game.

3. Jarrius Jackson, Texas Tech - 20.5 ppg, 2.9 apg
Like Jordan, Jackson is on the court nearly the entire game (38.4 minutes per game a season ago). Unlike Jordan, Jackson is more apt to shoot than pass. Jackson is among the best three-point shooters in the Big 12. He hit 45 percent from beyond the arc a year ago (73-for-163).

4. Acie Law, Texas A&M - 16.1 ppg, 4.0 apg
Like many of the point guards on this list, Law was his team's leading scorer and assist man last season. If the 6-3 senior can improve his three-point shot (33 percent last year), he could easily put up 20 points per game.

5. Sean Singletary, Virginia - 17.7 ppg, 4.4 apg
Singletary was the Cavaliers' first All-ACC First Team selection since 1992. The 6-0 junior out of Philadelphia is not only solid when the ball is in his hands; he is strong on defense as well. Singletary averaged nearly two steals per game, good enough for fifth in the conference.

6. Kammron Taylor, Wisconsin - 14.2 ppg, 2.4 apg
A 6-2 senior, Taylor needs to be more of a point guard this season. He is still adapting to the role, but with players like Alando Tucker surrounding him, Taylor's assists per game should increase. Taylor is consistent. He scored in double figures 24 times last season and eclipsed 20 points seven times.

7. AJ Price, Connecticut
Officially a red-shirt sophomore, Price has yet to step on the court for Connecticut after nearly dying of a rare brain disorder two years ago. Last season he satt out recovering from the illness, but also was suspended from the program for an off-court incident involving some stolen laptops. Finally ready to play, he is going to be heavily relied upon by coach Jim Calhoun. The Huskies are young, and Price hasn't played basketball in two years, but the ball will be in his hands in every close situation. He might not be as good a passer as Marcus Williams was last year, but he is a better shooter.

8. Taurean Green, Florida - 13.3 ppg, 4.7 apg
The starting point guard on the defending national champion Gators, Green, and just about the entire team, returned for an encore. With so many weapons, Green's scoring average might not improve much this year, but his assists should. The Gators are certainly the top team in the nation entering the season and all roads to the basket lead through Green's hands.

9. Bo McCalebb, New Orleans - 19.0 ppg, 1.5 apg
McCalebb's season was cut short by a wrist injury last year. He only made it into four games before receiving a medical red-shirt for the year. In his last full season (his sophomore year), he averaged 22.6 points, 3.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game. Fully healthy again, expect him to put up similar or better numbers this season.

10. Dominic James, Marquette - 15.3 ppg, 5.4 apg
The Big East Rookie of the Year last season, James is only going to get better this year. The 5-11 sophomore started every game last season and also averaged better than four rebounds per game. He needs to improve his outside shot though to take his game to the next level. He connected on only 30 percent of his attempts from three-point range.
