From ESPN Insider's College Basketball Rumors http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/features/rumors/_/date/20110303#3674:

"Rob Howe of HawkeyeInsider.com reported Tuesday that Cezar Guerrero had to cancel his expected visit to Iowa this coming weekend due to a scheduling conflict.

According to Howe, Iowa, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have each offered scholarships. Guerrero has already taken officials to Western Kentucky as well as Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, and Howe writes that Iowa, Marquette, Florida State and Kansas are the schools in the mix for his final two official visits."

Maybe Buzz won't go Juco for our last scholarship assuming Todd Mayo signs.

I'd like Guerrero. A true point guard with blinding speed, maybe he could be for us what we thought Reggie Smith could be. A reliable deputy to Cadougan for a couple years before blossoming. I know some services list him as a top 100 prospect, and Cali guys often fly under the radar with the likes of ESPN. I think he'd be a good use of our last schollie, and considering the development of Otule and Gardner, I think we could get by without another big man, though it would really make Philip Nolan a top priority for 2012.

MUfan12

A little surprised by this to be honest. If I'm Derrick Wilson I'm not thrilled to hear they're recruiting another PG in the same class.

Boone

I agree. What was the point of signing D. Wilson, if we were just going to sign another point guard in the same class 5 months later?

brewcity77

Reggie Smith left. Buzz intended us to have Cadougan the junior, Smith the sophomore, and Wilson the freshman. But when Smith left, that became impossible. He's not recruiting over Wilson, he's replacing Smith. Let's not forget Wilson signed in early November, about 6 weeks before Smith announced he was going to transfer. Is it really a good idea to have Cadougan our only natural point with any experience and count on one freshman to deputize in case things go wrong?

Especially one ranked slightly higher, at least according to ESPN.

I wouldn't mind much as D Wilson. 3 point guards regardless of class is what you're gonna see throughout most D1 programs.

Boone

While he'd be in the same class as Junior, if we really need another point guard, then I'd opt for an experienced one (i.e. a Juco).

True, but having two in the same class would really increase the odds of a transfer by one of them. Unless Buzz can convince Wilson to redshirt.

Don't forget Singleton, either. I know he's a walk-on, but he'll get PT.

Might be a bit of a longshot now that the visit to Iowa is back on...

http://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1195628

The on again, off again visit from 2011 point guard prospect Cezar Guerrero is back on again. After initially scheduling the visit, a mid-term project nearly derailed the trip to Iowa one day later, but after some juggling of his schedule, the talented point guard will now be making the trip to Iowa City after all.

Cezar Guerrero's visit to Iowa is back on again.
"He is really excited that he can make the visit," said his older brother Joe, who is helping Cezar through the recruiting process.

On Tuesday it looked as if the official visit would have to be rescheduled due to the fact that his film/cinema class at St. John's Don Bosco High School would be working on a mid-term film project on Saturday morning.

But, with a little convincing from Guerrero, the trip was back on by Wednesday evening.

"He worked it out with his teacher today," his brother said. "He actually kind of begged the teacher a little bit to move the mid-term project to later this week so he could make his visit to Iowa this weekend."

This will be Guerrero's fourth official visit during the recruiting process. After verbally committing to Western Kentucky in the fall, he decided not to sign with the Hilltoppers. After a strong senior campaign where he averaged 28 points a game, the Bellflower, CA prep has seen his stock rise with many high major programs.

According to his brother, Iowa certainly raised their stock in the last two weeks, thanks to a visit to the final game of his senior season by Hawkeye Head Coach Fran McCaffery.

"The fact that he came all the way out here was big," he said. "Iowa's assistant coach (Sherman Dillard) had been out here and we have talked to Coach McCaffery on the phone. It really impressed us that he took the time to come out here."

After trips to Western Kentucky, Oklahoma, and last week to Oklahoma State, he would have one more official visit that he could take before signing in late April. However, there is a chance that after this weekend, Guerrero could be done taking visits, even with schools like Kansas trying to get involved.

"It will depend on how he feels after the visit this weekend," he brother said. "Right now he's not sure about taking another visit and it could be that he may be done taking official visits after the trip to Iowa."

Well, it probably comes down to availability. There's probably no more than a small handful of high-major point guard prospects in any give year coming from the JUCO ranks. Of those, how many have already signed with other schools? How many are already deep in the recruiting process with other coaches and aren't looking for new suitors? We've been in on Guerrero for awhile. It might be easier to Buzz to continue pursuing a known commodity than trying to open up a new search for guys that may not even be interested.

Sherm Dillard is a very good recruiter.  He was Bobby Cremins top assistant for a number of years and before that worked at Cal.  Very good hire by McCaffrey.

I say recruit two PG.  We will need a backup for Junior next year.  If we only recruit one and he is a bust, we are screwed.

Kid lives about 15 minutes from me.  None of the local schools offered or are interested?  Interesting, yet he does have some decent schools that are interested in his services.

He scored 48 against Mater Dei, which is a basketball power in So. Cal.

He originally chose Western Kentucky over Oklahoma, Fresno State, UTEP and UNLV

brewcity77

Looks like Oregon State and UCLA are both interested, per his ESPN profile. He had to sit out his junior year because he transferred schools, so his stock plummeted, hence why his offers were coming from teams like Western Kentucky and Fresno State. This year, he's lit it up, so suddenly he's hearing from teams in the PAC-10, Big Ten, and Big East, not to mention Kansas. Nothing like playing well to make people notice you.

I saw Oregon State, but didn't see UCLA or any So. Cal schools on rivals, scout, etc.  I guess I missed the ESPN version.

Easy to miss, it's not in the "Considering" field, it's at the bottom in the Notes. But at least he's played his way into some interest. I think he'd be a great addition if Buzz can ink him up.

Lennys Tap

He's got offers from the Big East (MU and WVU), the Big 12 (OK and OK ST), the ACC (Wake Forest) the Big 10 (Iowa) and the Pac 10 (Oregon St) with interest from the "biggies" (KU and UCLA). He rated anywhere from 60-110 and is a 3 or 4 star. Doubt we'll get him, but he sounds okay to me. Some here are in a panic over our point guard situation - I'd think they'd be salivating over this guy.

I think we need to be going after two start switchables.
