Watching the Nova/ND game (and ND is up by 29! ... destroying Nova which is good for us) and they handed out their BE awards.

Jay Bilas picked Jae Crowder as BE "Rookie OF The Year."

BrewCity83

Just wondering...are you gonna edit this every time ND gets another basket (haha) ?

Would you like me too?

BrewCity83

That's ok...I'm watching it.  A rare occasion when I root for old ND.

Don't let denverMU know that.

Can't really argue with that, I always forget the JUCO transfers for awards like that. He's averaging 13.8 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 2 apg, and 1.3 spg. Pretty monstrous for his first year in the conference.

denverMU

Yes, 4everwarriors, the last time you rooted for ND we crushed them by 22 points.

Just in case - at some point in the game Bilas mentioned that Marquette and Buzz had a perfect defensive plan on ND - limit Abromaitis, and Hansbrough, and let the rest get their points.

Wait a second....Marshon Brooks says MU had the best defensive scheme he saw all year and you got Jay Bilas prolly ESPN's top college bball analyst saying Buzz had the perfect defensive scheme to stopping ND. But I thought Buzz can't coach defense.

I think it's been pretty evident in our last stretch of games that "philosophy" hasn't really been the problem this year so much as "execution."

Just my $.02

I am pretty sure the Big East has a rule that only a freshman can win newcomer of the year.

Buzz's teams will play good defense when he has enough bigmen that can play defense.

The scheme has been different the last few games.  Plus, it was different against ND (and maybe PC?).

The last two games mixed in a lot more zone.  Against ND, Marquette played a lot of no-catch to deny Abrom/Hansb the ball.  I don't recall if they played a similar strategy against PC and Brooks, because he had 16 shots.

Someone described to me that it's the help defense that is crap.  This explains how MU can be better playing a press, zone, or no-catch, where the help defense is less of an issue.  Personally, I still think it's the base defensive philosophy that is at fault.

Having said all that, the defense has been very good the last three games.

The help scheme is not the problem, the execution and slow rotations is.

This.

Any team that keeps a possession going long enough will end up with wide open shots because our rotations will fall further and further behind with each pass.  It's frustrating to watch.

Remember that Inside Marquette video (is that what they were called?) very early in the season when they showed the team working over and over again on a defensive rotation?  I don't remember who the player was, but Buzz kept screaming that you have to sprint to help...that if you slide you'll be too slow and end up being late.  Finally they got it right and Buzz was hooting and hollering like they had won the championship.  It was endearing.

Seems like perhaps that was a sign of things to come.

Well, don't look now, but our much-maligned defense that was rated in the 80s and 90s most of the year is now up to #57 on kenpom.com. Two more stout defensive performances and a solid tournament could have us into the top 50, which would be a pretty impressive feat.

Crowder as Beast Newcomer of Year should be a no-brainer.

Question: Why is Buzz sarting EWill over Crowder? Looking fo an intelligent answer.

Not what I was going for, but seems like it fits the MO of a majority of posters during this season.

I thought this too.  DJO wasn't mentioned in the conversation at all last year.

My assumption is that EWill had a great week of practice before the UConn game and earned the start.  After that Buzz said he won't change the starting lineup until we lose.

Exactly what djo's pump fake said.  Buzz said it on the postgame show after the Providence game.
