You're right.
Likewise, it's not a good idea to let donors call the shots at your university. If Barton really wanted to affect change, this is the worst possible way for him to have gone about it. If anything, this is going to cause the university to dig its heels in so as not to appear (at least in public) that they're caving to a rich booster.

Agreed.  Its a very fine line that an institution has to walk.

I also think he never anticipated this would go public.  Forgot about the Freedom of Information aspect.

what a dick.

Speaking of Dicks ...

Dick Strong still sits at center court for every home game.  Often he has some very well heeled friends sitting with him.  What role does the former billionaire (now multi multi millionaire) still have with MU's basketball team?

Here's our guy, you'll see him at MU games across from the MU bench at home or behind it on the road (when he attends).  To put it mildly, he doesn't like the limelight as some other big donors do at some schools.  He plays an important role financially for the athletic department, has played an important role with travel needs in the past, etc.  No one publicly talks about his role, not Cottingham, not Cords, not Buzz, not Crean, not Deane...pretty much nobody.

He shuns the limelight because he tried to rip-off Strong investors of $650,000 (google "strong and mutual fund market timing" or something like this) and almost went to jail over this via Eliot Spitzer.

This transgression cost him almost a billion dollars in personal wealth (that said, he's not eating from trash cans).  It also cost thousands of jobs in Wisconsin when he had to sell his firm and a panicky fire-sale price to Wells Fargo and then moved its operations out of state.

What you described is his role before he lost 80% to 90% of his net worth (probably still worth a hundred million or so) and his name became associated with discredited billionaires that do very stupid things.

So, what is his role now?  Is MU worried to be associated with someone of his current reputation?

P.S. MU now has its own planes ... it has for years.

To be fair, I don't think Strong ever sought the limelight before the Spitzer incident went down.

I trust you don't mean MU owns planes.

Spitzer makes me squirm.

Gotcha, that makes more sense.  We own several gulfstreams and they aren't cheap, but we own them outright so they are always available and not shared.  Certainly can save a lot more money going the route you're talking about.

G6s, Chicos?

One is an older G3, that's the one I've flown.  The other is a G-4 (I think...never been on it).
