Sorry if this was already posted, but looked interesting and I didnt know Joe was considering this (or Buzz). What do you guys think?

Steve Buscemi

I could see him as being next years butler type of player including being a big team leader... but I could also see him getting injured easily with a 'shot' knee

That was my first thought when I saw on the floor Tuesday night. I would love to have him another year, but the reality is that he has significant problems with both knees and I doubt he would last another year.

BCHoopster

Are you guys serious, Joe will have two bad knees, need a power player unless
somebody can tell me Jamil Wilson can really board??

jmayer1

I like Joe a lot, he is real hustle guy, gives his all, and appears to be a good team leader; but he would be a 24 year-old senior with 2 bad knees when the season starts next year.  It might be in the best interest of both him and the team that he gives MU whatever he can this year and then moves on to the next phase of his life next year, whatever that might be--basketball related or not.

Yeah i think this would be in the best interest for both MU and Fulce... who knows maybe he'll be on board for a grad-assistant job

This.

Love the guy, but his upside isn't all that up.

LA

I agree with others that his knee(s) might not last another season of competitive basketball. I would hate for him to not be able to even play in his driveway with his kids in 10 or 15 years just to try to play another year only to get injured again.

tower912

If I thought that a redshirt would allow him to come back and be the Shawn Marion-lite that he was advertised to be when he signed, then yes.   If not, let him come back as a graduate assistant and try to bring in a big.

I don't see that at all. On either count.

I really hope Joe gets back this year. I definitely feel we need him on this year's team, especially when it comes to the Big East season. We may need someone like him next year as well, but I'm hoping another year of seasoning on Otule and Gardner, along with a guy in Crowder who should be better acclimated to D1, will lessen the rebounding problems we're having now. Not sure who'd replace Joe's energy, but that's another quality we desperately need now.

If he does take the redshirt, I would happily have him back. It may take up a scholarship for a year, but it's not like we have a surefire prospect waiting until the Spring period to sign. One more year of Fulce would be a crapshoot as far as his knees go, but he's a leader and a Warrior, he deserves whatever chance we can give him. And from a recruiting standpoint, maybe it would cost us someone like God's Gift Achiuwe, but it might also give us more freedom in 2012 as we pursue guys like JP Tokoto, Philip Nolan, and Jarnell Stokes.

The guy has had nothing but knee problems since he's been here.  Not sure why you wouldn't see another injury as a distinct possibility?

Nine games into the season and he's on the DL for the second time with a knee that's "completely shot". I'd say that makes him a very high risk for injury if he comes back, whether this year or next.

brewcity77

I know it may not be the best answer for the long-term, but I think letting Joe come back for another year is the right thing to do. He may get injured again, we may wish the schollie had went to a new face, but Joe loves Marquette, loves being a Warrior, and brings an energy that isn't easy to replace. I know high-major basketball is often seen as a business, but from a Cura Personalis standpoint, is there anyone who deserves another chance more than Fulce, or anyone who would give more of themselves if they got it?

Besides, my guess is we'd end up replacing him with a 2-year Juco. I'll take a year of risk with Fulce over 2 years of a hit-or-miss prospect at this point. He's earned that in terms of loyalty and respect. Just my 2 cents.

Jay Bee

He can't redshirt.

But if he remains injured throughout the rest of the season he would likely be able to get another year of eligibility...

There is no such thing.

Medical hardship waiver...same thing Chris Otule received if MU decides to go after it and if the NCAA decides to grant it

Wahddup, J?  Technically - a 'hardship waiver'.  And no, not if the NCAA decides to grant it.  It's a conference decision, homeboy.

I think Joe is a special kid and that whatever he and Buzz decide is fine.  Remember that he was the very first kid who agreed to sign with Buzz and Marquette after Crean left town when a series of recruits were opting out.  Joe deserves every chance to have his senior year be a memorable one, regardless if it is this year or next.  I want him to be remembered as that kid who got his 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 15 minutes of hustle every night he could.  He's earned it.
