If you've read the STUDENT SECTION thread you've already got an idea of what I'm looking to do. For those that haven't here's a little background on me.

Currently I am the Marketing Intern with the Athletic Department and was looking to assemble some students to brainstorm ideas for starting new cheers in the student section and potentially starting a new tradition for the students on game day that could help better distinguish ourselves as a student fan base and instill some pride in student body as well.

I am currently in charge of the Marquette Superfan Flyers distributed on gameday (look for the first one this Saturday) so we have a vehicle to try and teach the masses but I need students both to help think of ideas that would work and implement them if and when the time comes.

If you'd like to contribute or get involved at all please message me. I am looking to set up a really short get together in the brew this weekend for a half hour just to get the ball rolling.

Thanks if you've read this far and I really hope we can make our student section a real group to be reckoned with!

I believe Gwaki owns it.  Bowsher can put you into contact with him.

Something that is simple and effective would be to start coordinating the student section on free throws.  There are studies out there that show when people just wave their hands, yell, and act crazy, it becomes noise and doesn't impact the shooter.

However, if the student section coordinates and simultaneously moves from left to right, right to left, or from bottom to top, that can impact a shooter.  The large scale movement shifts the background perception of the player at the line.  There are a few fan bases that already do this (GU does for sure).

Simple and effective.  If you can mobile the student section to do that, it's a good first step towards other things.

When it comes to intimidating a free throw shooter, there's also always...this:

Good luck in your efforts, bleedbluegold03!

I'd love to see something like this really take off. MU's student section has long been pretty weak. A few guys that I know tried to get chant sheets/flyers going during my senior year ('01-'02) but there was very little interested from the student body so they gave up after about 5-6 games.

IMO, the sale of alcohol has a lot to do with the student section being disengaged from the game. It's basically like going to a bar and getting to watch a live sporting event for "free." A majority of the students seem more interested in getting drunk than anything else, not to mention the constant back-and-forth from their seats to the concession stand and bathroom. They miss so much of the game that it's hard to stay engaged. Admittedly, the 21-year-old me would have been PO'd if they stopped selling beer and I definitely had more than my fair share of Miller Lites at MU games, but I really do think that it's a big contributor to the overall disinterest from the student section.

EDIT: For the record, I'm not suggesting they stop selling beer during games.

This is your Yankee Doodle Dandy theme song but as you listen to this start it out with:  GOLDEN EAGLES WE WILL WIN whoa oh O oh O oh O.... GOLDEN EAGLES we will WIN whoa oh O oh O oh O...  Whoa oh O, etc............. instead of Glascow Rangers...  Would be FANTASTIC during warm ups or really anytime you could get the whole student section to do it.

Thought if I posted anything to do with football / soccer no one would even look at it.  There is no question that the best fans / ideas come from overseas.  I have a ton more ideas like this.  Many are really simple.

At some point, I think you need to get the band to do something that isn't 20 years out of date too.

I'm almost remiss to post this because of the last time a band thread was started, but they have to pay for their own sheet music which is very expensive.  As a club, they've got a limited budget.  If people want new songs bad enough, donations would be an easy way to get it started.

I remember a Duke game once where the entire student section stood behind the basket hands raised and stock still, and as the shooter was coming up into his shooting motion, the entire student section moved their raised hands simultaneously all the way to the left. It gave the optical illusion of the entire basket stanchion moving about a foot to the shooter's left and the shooter airballed the shot.

They do play "Holiday" by Green Day and "Sell Out" by Reel Big Fish (although I don't know if I've heard it this year).  Personally, though, I prefer a classic like "Carry On My Wayward Son" to something current like Lady Gaga.

Please do something. Marquette students can surely do better than the cameron crazies. Drives me nuts, which I suppose is their point.

Do they still play Enter Sandman?  I seem to recall them actually doing it really well back in the early nineties.

This is never going to happen.... but it sounds like an opportunity to create beer price incentives that are tied to the state of the game.  Marquette ahead at half time = $0.50 off beer or something like that.  Increased sale volume should be allow the BC to break even.  You could also work with the bars on campus because Cafferty's used to do $2 pitchers if you turned in your student ticket - that could be tied to team performance as well.

Also, why are students buying anything at the game in the first place?  Just go in with a flask, buy a coke or sprite, and mix it up.  Or just load up with the beer - a couple years ago I watched a kid run in with a 12 pack on his shoulder during the sprint to the seats.

Saw something similar last year or so from a smaller school  . . the students behind the basket swayed to and fro with kind of a white noise "ooooh", then right before the free throw, they shouted the school's letters did that tilting kind of thing discussed above.  Interestingly, as the game went on, the students varied it, taking it longer and longer until you could see the free throw shooter was kind of waiting for it.  You could see it really got into the shooter's head.  They almost held up their shots trying to time it and it really was upsetting their rhythm.

we totally should play Jump Around at the 10 minute mark of the 2nd half.  then everyone could jump up and down.

Good idea to get organized. At this point, whatever you do make it simple and do it well. You don't have to have 10 different chants. The point is to make progress this year and make it better each year so that in 3 or 4 years you have a solid "tradition" that gives us more of a home court advantage. It's a lot to ask for in a huge NBA arena, but anything at this point would be progress. Good luck.

Fan support in this country is crappy and disorganized at best. That's what makes places like Cameron and Utah State that much more impressive. As though just making noise is going to ever accomplish anything. All of these players are used to hearing noise, it is easy to tune that out.

This one is so simple and could be fantastic.  Obvious change to  .....   GOLDEN EAGLES, here we go...  A minute or two of this during warmups would do wonders for the fans, (realizing we are here to cheer) our players (gets the adreline going), and the opponents who will be thinking "are they going to be this loud all game?"

One of the best pro sports chants I remember was in Seattle in the late 90s. Karl Malone was notorious for taking an extremely long time to shoot his FTs and the 10-second limit was never called on him. Therefore, when Utah was playing in Seattle during the Playoffs and Malone went to the line, the building went quiet except for seemingly everyone in the standings counting, "1...2...3..." etc until he actually shot the ball. It was outstanding!

RIP, Sonics!

DJO's Pump Fake

As players, and I am not one, I would venture that the fight song followed by the music being pumped throughout the Bradley Center gets them pumped up just fine.

I would probably vomit in my seat if I heard that soccer chant at a basketball game.

I can't change your mind, but I can tell you that if you had ever been in a stadium where the entire crowd chants or sings the entire time you would have a different opinion.  Believe it or not there actually is a reason that it is done almost everywhere but the US.  Emotions can (does) feed the energy of the players.

If creating constant, continuous, real energy in the BC caused you to vomit, (which I would rather it not) then so be it.
