Marquette in the Big Ten ?

Since the Big Ten has expanded next year to include Nebraska, why not include Marquette ? It would be the perfect conference for them. It would make for much more exciting games when their not playing a top team. If they played Illinois or Minnesota i'm sure they would have sellouts and the games would have more pride then if they played Seton Hall or St. John's.

Of course it would make their game with the Badgers that much more intense.

Of course beggars can't be choosers the Big East is much better than Conference USA.

I'm sure people have thought of this already but I don't know the answer.

Is it because their a private school and the Big Ten wants to keep it only with one private school in Northwestern or they don't have a football team ?

Look at the schools in the Big Ten.

We have less than half of the smallest school's student body if you take out Northwestern. And Northwestern is in there because it is one of the greatest academic schools in the nation.

The Big Ten is built around big state schools. Not medium-sized private religious schools. The Big East is a much better fit.

Northwestern is in there because of history.  If the B10 were forming now, they wouldn't take Northwestern.  Chicago was also a member of the B10 when it started too.

no - we need Miller Park to host the much desired annual Wisconsin State College Tourney between MU, UW-MAdison, UW-Milwaukee and UW- Green Bay...

MU made a lot of poor decisions years ago, unfortunately.  Medical school drop, dropping football, Avenue Commons, letting Canadian Dimes in, etc.

At one point in time, MU had one of the best football programs in the country.  For an entire decade they finished in the top 10 in victories and were ranked...beat teams like Michigan State, Wisconsin, Boston College, Navy, Iowa, etc

MU is mostly a liberal arts college with the intent to educate and train undergraduates.  Sure we have Doctoral and Masters programs, but we aren't a big research institution like most of the Big Ten schools.  We do rank higher academically than some Big Ten schools, but when it comes to money for research, grants, endowment, alumni size, etc....not going to happen.

Marquette football posted several successful seasons in the 1920s and 1930s including undefeated seasons in 1922, 1923, and 1930. From 1922 to 1923 Marquette held a 17–0–1 record and outscored its opponents 374–15. The 1930 Marquette squad had seven games in which it held the opposition scoreless and held a 155–7 scoring margin. From 1920 to 1936 Marquette held a 90–32–6 record. In 1937 the 20th ranked Marquette Golden Avalanche had a 7–1 regular season record and appeared in the first Cotton Bowl Classic against Texas Christian University, losing 16–6. NCAA football was last played by Marquette in 1960, after accumulating several years of budget deficits for the university. Their last successful season was 1953. Since then, they had accumulated a 10–44–3 record, including two straight seasons (1956 to 1957) without a win or even a tie. Marquette Stadium, the football team's home since 1924, was dismantled in 1978. The sport has since been brought back at the club level.
