What coach takes a bubble team and agrees to a road game to the west coast that starts at 2 am eastern time against a good but underrated team where you stand much more to lose than gain.  Steve Lavin does.

Isn't it very possible the game was scheduled before Lavin took the job?

They were saying during last nights telecast it wasn't, and how he went out of his way to schedule it this season.

It's a good game to get your team ready and it could even help at selection time. Denny Crum used to get teams in the NCAAs with a difficult non-conference schedule

It was definitely difficult.  I think that your asking too much of your players to go to the west coast for a 2 am tip off, and then fly back and play columbia the next day.  Its these types of losses that can really hurt a bubble team come march, and with st. johns tourney hopes most likely to be razor thin, it just seems that your putting your team at too much of a disadvantage when you sign up for a game like this.

He is doing it for recruiting purposes. He has ties to California and wants to recruit there.

Why were you up that early watching it is the better question.

brewcity77

Wasn't that early...it was on when I was going to bed last night. Watched about half of the second half before I went to sleep.

Maybe he was up late partying with beers and girls.

I'm pretty sure that St. John's could knock back a few, come out with no shoes on, and still beat Columbia.

Maybe he wanted to put his team into what he knew would be a hostile environment to help get them ready for the Big East season.  There are only some many cupcakes for all the power programs to snack on.

Edit: Removed unnecessary sarcasm.

- He's a Bay Area boy. A coming home of sorts and...
- ...his team gets to play good competition. St. Mary's is a really good squad with or without Samhan.
- Cali is a hotbed of recruits. In fact, SJU got a commit from an LA prepster.
- Just like Buzz, to stay relevant in college bkb, you must recruit kids from coast to coast.
