I thought he didn't like being called Ox
Homer was calling him the beast
You heard it here first. Davante Gardner will be a Beast this year.

I don't want him to have a nickname that instantly elicits profanity, anger and general nauseousness when I hear it.  Plus, the Fridge name is already taken.

On the other hand, Ox is a pretty cool nickname

His first name is spelled Davante, not Devonte.  I'm just saying that since his name is misspelled in the SOTG box.

mea culpa.. wouldn't want to mess with no one nicknamed Ox...

I just don't believe you should call a Stud of the Game a big dumb animal, unless you are quoting Tommy Boy. The Fridge will always be in our hearts and minds.

No, his high school nicknames were Ox or Big Self.

"Ox" for sure!! I'm sure you can all hear the entire Bradley Center yelling 'OXXXXXXXXXXX' any time he makes a great play.

Is he quickly becoming a fan favorite? Not that the fans don't like Blue, etc., but seems like there's always a player that just endears himself to the fans and gets the love in the Bradley.

Go Ox!!!

Not sure how to stretch an 'X' without it sounding like an odd quiet 'S'... might I suggest we stretch the 'ah' part instead?

Go Ox!!!

Any impact big is going to be an immediate fan favorite at the BC.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

When someone comes along with a nickname as cool as "Ox" - don't mess with it.

Fridge for sure ... the kid was so cool at the free throw line, he was playing like he had ice in his veins
... plus we're Marquette, we're known for giving people nicknames, not having them handed to us

brewcity77

I don't even think there's a conversation here. His nickname is "Ox", or "Big Ox". The Fridge is a retired Chicago Bear. End of story.

+1.  this thread should be locked on that note

Dawson Rental

Please allow me a couple of further comments before we shut down wObbie.

1.  The original "fridge', William Perry, had a gold refrigerator implanted in one of his front teeth.  How does Davante do that without getting himself immersed in an NCAA investigation?

2.  "Fridge" and "happy happy hippo" emphasize Davante's size with the implication that he's overweight.  Since he came to Marquette, Davante's worked hard to drop weight so that he can be an effective player, something Perry was never willing to do.  Let's not stick him with a nickname that reminds everyone of what his problem was.

3.  I like "the artist".  I get it, Homer's pointing out one of Davante's best qualities - the way he reads his defender to find the best path to the basket.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.
