Probably has nothing to do with promoting a middling franchise, selling new jerseys/merchandise, desperately attempting to revitalize interest in a team that averaged 80 percent capacity (7th worst in the league) last year.
Nope, it's about giving the finger to political correct jerkoffs.

Benny B

Unless this is supposed to be some sort of analogy to MU changing their name back to Warriors, shouldn't this thread belong in the Superbar?

And if the former, let me be the first to say that this is not an apples-apples comparison.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

MUBurrow

say what you want, but I'm not convinced having a team named the bullets in the city with the highest murder rate in the country which also happens to be the nation's capital isn't in poor taste.

Avenue Commons

Ah, they changed the name because of the number of murders by handguns/bullets that were taking place in Washington DC. That's not political correctness, that's sanity.

The Washington Wizards will go back to being the Bullets over David Stern's dead body. There is nothing to this story. It's just hype.

And anyone that thinks Marquette will be the Warriors again really, really, really needs to move on at this point. We are almost all in agreement that the name change shouldn't have happened and they just should have changed the mascot. But it's over. I'm now mad at myself for typing this. Dead horse.

We Are Marquette

I wouldn't support a team that's named after a type of ammunition.

That said, I would wholeheartedly support any Native American mascot among the elementary school to high school to collegiate to professional ranks.

Is that why the Winnipeg Bombers are no more?   :)

HoopsMalone

We are the Golden Eagles and I am happy for that.  I wouldn't want the embarrassment of trying to change the name and losing that cause again.  I like the name.  I would oppose changing back to Warriors and I think many of the younger alums would too.  I was on campus when they tried to change it and no one cared.  People got mad when we were the Gold for a week, but no one cared about Warriors.

The Golden Eagle era has been great and looks to be getting even better.  We don't need constant change.  Let's roll with this identity.

I don't think anyone would buy a ticket to an NBA game in DC based off the team's name.

Golden Eagles is a lame nickname already used by a number of second tier schools.
It doesn't create a powerful  or distinctive image of MU.

Blue Horseshoe

That would be great. Please change the name back to "Bullets." Ammunition doesn't kill people, nut jobs do.

I find it offensive that there's a team in New York City called the Jets. While we're at it, the Giants is offensive to oversized people. And Packers is offensive(?) to homosexuals.

avid1010

Not apples to apples here...  I get the "get over it" argument, but it just isn't happening.

You sound like you don't have an opinion.

I have an opinion, which is why I don't have to repeat those that I read on the back of cars...  You sound unable to realize there's always a gray area to these issues.

Sanity? Thinking there's ANY correlation to violent crime and the nickname of a basketball team is pure insanity.

Ah yes, nothing creates a powerful and distinctive image for a university quite like a sports nickname.

WellsstreetWanderer

yes, like Spartans, Wolverines,Trojans, Crimson Tide etc.
these conjur up positive images but they were created in a time when people wanted bravado in their mascot and political correctness be damned. Golden Eagles is not distinctive or original.

Actually Crimson Tide was a nickname given by a sports writer that references the colors of the school/fans (Crimson and White) and the look of the players after a muddy 6-6 tie with auburn. So really it wasn't given to the team to drive bravado or increase the reputation of the school, it was descriptive. So really it perfectly counters what you are trying to say.

Please don't let facts get in the way of a good crusty 'ol nickname rant.
