While being a nerd that I am - checking a Halo Reach Review - I noticed Buycks on an advertisement.

The linked ad sent me to:

http://chooseyourowntickets.com/

Anyone see this yet? Or am I just behind the times.

It's a new marketing system advertisers (in this case MU) are using. You have probably visited the Marquette ticket site before so it remembers that and puts up the MU ad on a bunch of different pages you visit.

It surprised the heck out of me too. I thought MU was going national with their ticket marketing but then I had the same thing happen with an item I wanted to buy off overstock.com. It kept following me all over the internet.

I was surprised too, saw it on some KC Sports site... I think we are being followed.

It's called Re-Targeting.  It's an online advertising technique that allows advertisers to advertise to those that have shown interest in their product/service/offer but took no further action.  In this case they know you looked at tickets (or whatever it is you did) so they serve you ads on other sites you visit.

will deleting cookies undo the trace?

or have our IP addresses been stored and registered as "MU fans"?

The only time I've been on Gomarquette.com has been to watch the MU Basketball Revealed.  Guess whoever visits gets hit with banner ads to buy MU tickets wherever they go  :D

I think deleting cookies will stop it so but I am no expert at the technical aspects...

I work in advertising so I am familiar with some of the targeting capabilities but that's really the extent of my knowledge.

Deleting cookies will work in 95% of the cases, but advertisers are the kings of overcoming obstacles. They are using HTML5 databases, Flash storage and profiles to make sure that even if you do clear your cookies, they can recreate your profile.

They don't tend to use IP addresses, as those aren't always static and are typically shared among computers in the same house (or company) and therefore not granular enough.

All told, I think advertising is an integral part of the "free" web. While it's a little creepy to feel "followed", if I'm going to be marketed to, I'd rather see products I'm interested in...MU tickets certainly fit the bill :)

(sorry if this gets resurfaced as a result of this edit. I'm testing somethingband couldn't think of another way to do it.)
