blazers fans really seem to bring it strong from what I've seen surrounding Wes so far. I had no idea there were NBA fanbases like this anymore, but good for them. its cool, and really makes me wonder about what the fanbase was like for the Sonics.

Skatastrophy

Here's a great article about Wes with DJ, Jerel and Hayward getting mentions.  It looks like Portland loves WesMat already :)

Awesome:

Pen in hand, the 23-year-old swing man paused, looking at Buchanan and Cronin.

"I want you guys to know this is not going to change me," Matthews said. "It's not going to change my work ethic, it's not going to change my passion, it's not going to change what I can do to help your team win games. I want to make sure you guys to know that before I sign. This is not what I'm about. I'm about basketball."

"It gave me the chills," says Buchanan, Portland's director of college scouting. "It solidified our feelings. We knew we liked him, but that was like, 'This guy is us. He is what we're about.' "

My favorite part of that article is "In two weeks he will be getting a check for $9.2 million."  I wonder what that does to average salaries of year 2008 Marquette graduates?  Does MU Placement advertise that "Our recent graduates will individually earn up to $10 Million in 2010"?

The best part of this signing is that Wes could become the next MU alum to win an NBA title if the Blazers can pull off the heist of CP3.

This trade may explain why the Blazers wanted to add Wes, as they were supposedly close to getting Chris Paul before.

Rumors have Portland getting:  CP3 and Emeka.

New Orleans getting, Rudy Fernandez, Jared Bayless, Elliot Williams, Nicholas Batum, Andre Miller's big contract which is off the books either this year or next, Joel Pryzbilla's big contract coming off the books this year, some first round picks, and cash.  That would leave New Orleans with Pryzbilla, Miller, and Peja all coming off the books and Emeka's big long term deal off the books.  New Orleans would get a haul of new young players with upside and tons of cap space. The money is close to working out, but Portland might have to give up Greg Oden or get a third team involved.

Even if they give up Oden, Portland would have a lineup featuring Paul and Roy in the backcourt and an interior rotation of Aldrich, Camby, and Okafur.  That is deadly.  Wes would be perfect off the bench or starting in a three guard lineup matching up defensively with the other wings.

After giving up all of those guards, there is also a point guard on the cheap who has played for the Blazers and could fit nicely backing up Paul:  Travis Diener.

A nice summer topic  ;)

The Blazers president and GM through 2007 was Steve Patterson, a wayland academy grad '75 (beaver dam, wi), and son of Ray Patterson, former pres and GM of Bucks and Rockets--
Does any one have current info/status on Steve?
I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.
