"Dwyane Wade said in a recent interview, "If we [the Miami Heat] lose a couple in a row this season ... You all are going to make it seem like the World Trade Center is coming down again."

There is no proper context for a remark of such profound narcissism, but here is the full quote: "We're going to be wearing a bullseye. But that's what you play for. We enjoy the bullseye. Plus, there's going to be times when we lose 2-3 games in a row, and it seems like the world has crashed down. You all are going to make it seem like the World Trade is coming down again, but it's not going to be nothing but a couple basketball games." Fanhouse originally mis-reported Wade's quote, but if he wasn't wearing a bulls-eye before, he is now."

So idiotic.

Does he mean the media and fans will believe it's a conspiracy?

dude's just referencing the enormous media coverage over the WTC.   He's not belittling the loss of life or anything.

Hell people exploit the WTC incident for their political agendas.

Too soon? I guess he'll just have to stick to Oklahoma City/McVeigh references.

Horrible analogy and I'm sure he'd be the first to tell you that.  Everyone make mistakes.

Of course, but it's still quite pathetic that he could even mention basketball and the WTC together.  Like NickelDimer said, horrible analogy.

Blackhat

I'm sure Wade would probably say "stop being such a sensitive p___y."

You are allowed to reference the WTC and say things like "guy came at me like I was a trade center hijacker".

Despite people telling you so, you don't need to be so easily offended.  Especially when he is just using it to reference the media coverage.

I have no problem with this.  He's simply saying that losing a couple basketball games isn't a big deal...9/11 was a big deal.  All he's asking for is a little perspective on things.  If they lose a couple games and he compares his feelings to being similar to the way he felt ater 9/11, then you'd have a point.

+1, referencing WTC is not the same as equating something with it. Why don't you actually think about his point before you act all offended. If anything he is criticizing the media and its hysteria over things of little real importance (see Gibson and Lohan), while much more important things happen everyday that no one takes a second glance at.

I'm not "all offended".  I simply posted the news article that was pointing to the analogy, and I find it hard that you can argue there is *nothing* wrong with it.  It's still a stupid thing to say regardless of the context.

I wasn't technically meaning "you". Sorry. I just get sick when someone does a comparison and the media and commentators make a big deal about it as though they are equating the two things.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with Wade's comparison, it is simply that...a comparison (and not even about the comparison to the event but the media reaction to it.) Politicians have promoted their own agenda using 9/11, musicians have made money and writers have capitalized on the fear it created. Oh and by the way, the comparison is correct - if the Heat start off the year, say, the same way the Cavs did last year ESPN will act like its Armageddon.

Come on. The point he is making is that in the grand scheme of things sports doesn't mean anything.  Something like September 11th does.

Wade doesn't need a pass because he didn't say anything wrong.

It's a bad analogy because it's too sensitive a subject to reference in this context.  That being said, it's not a big deal.

I think it was a poor choice, but not a big deal.  Ideally he would have used a different analagy.

Wade has really turned into the attack dog of the Heat though and this is one of the comments.  He responded to Noah's "It's going to be like Hollywood down there" comment, he responded to Dan Gilbert.  He also called the Bulls disloyal when the Bulls were big contenders for James and Bosh.  He probably has the most guts out of the three down there, so he probably has to be the one to take on the tough guy role.

Might be good leadership when trying to lead guys like James and Bosh.  He is the big brother looking out for everyone picking on the little brothers.

No problem with me. Freedom of speech.

He'll have to live with whatever junk people throw at him. Whatever.

Let's see. You called Wade narcissistic and the remark idiotic. Now you don't want anyone to jump all over you. Seems to me when you give it out you ought to man up and take it too. You're entitled to your opinion but so is Wade. I wasn't the least bit offended by the reference as you were. I was however put off by what you seemed to feel was interesting. I'd have thought there were many more pressing issues to discuss.

Wades point is spot on. That said, the correct point can be said incorrectly. It was in poor taste even if by mentioning the Trade Centers, he was doing the opposite of belittling their importance.

I do not believe that Wade graduated, so it is highly likely he did not take his mandatory course of Political Correctness 101.

"You all are going to make it seem like the World Trade is coming down again, but it's not going to be nothing but a couple basketball games."

If that is the comment, I don't see the problem.  He is saying specifically that it's just basketball, and it's not something serious like the WTC.  Why would anybody be offended by that?
Calvin:  I'm a genius.  But I'm a misunderstood genius.
Hobbes:  What's misunderstood about you?
Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

martyconlonontherun

I'm not offended, but if you don't think this a PR screw-up you are lying to yourself. Especially considering the emotions being brought up with the mosque battle. There was absolutely no reason to bring it up in an interview.

Skatastrophy

What's wrong with you guys?  This is just an off the cuff comment and you're all making it seem like the World Trade Center had jumbo-jets full of passengers crashed into them at full speed killing thousands.  Sheesh, get a grip!

mu_hilltopper

People who are so easily offended probably do not watch the NBA.  I mean, those tattoos alone would scare them off.
