"Whatever the reason, Matthews' decision to distance himself from Madison is unfortunate because he is already the best NBA player ever to come out of the city and he has a chance to reclaim his hero status in the place where he got his start."

I didn't realize that the WiSJ was the ultimate authority on who is and who isn't a hero in Madison.  Aren't those things best decided by the proletariat people?

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

So are we to assume that he no longer has "hero status" in the city of Madison because he failed to grant an interview to this schmuck?

haha.  Ya, really.  Does this author think he is some kind of kingmaker?  Are Madison basketball fans going to base their opinions on Wes based on his writing?

I don't know what he meant by inferring that Wes lost his hero status, but Wes brought a high school state title to Madison and is probably the best player to come out of there.  How on Earth could Wes have lost his hero status?  If going to Marquette and speaking highly of Marquette is such a sin that you are no longer a hero in the eyes of a Madison paper, then the criteria for being a hero is a little undesirable.
