Hayward rewarded for his hard work

I called Lazar Hayward tonight in the minutes following his being picked 30th overall by the Washington Wizards.

A little blurb from a local Buffalo news station:

Buffalo (WKBW.com) For the second year in a row a Western New York product has been selected in the first round of the NBA draft. Last year it was Jonny Flynn, this year it's Traditional product Lazar Hayward. Hayward was selected by the Washington Wizards with the 30th overall pick in Thursday's NBA Draft.

"It's like a blessing in disguise", Hayward told Eyewitness Sports on Thursday night. "I'm very blessed. No one thought I'd be in this spot, no one had me on a draft board. To be in the first round it's a blessing".

Hayward is coming off a fantastic career at Marquette. He led the team as a senior in scoring, rebounds and steals. He spent Thursday with his father in Orchard Park."

And from his Twitter, Jonny Flynn had this to say about the Minnesota draftee:
"Lazzzaaarrrr!! I played AAU wit him growing up. Yessir!!! You made it boy!!!"

Great job Todd - thanks for tracking him down.  Wonderful to get the excitement both from your talk with him and Buzz.  What a wonderful night!
The www.valueaddsports.com analysis of basketball, football and baseball players are intended to neither be too hot or too cold - hundreds immerse themselves in studies of stats not of interest to broader fan bases (too hot), while others still insist on pure observation (too cold).

Great for Lazar, and great for the MU program. I have no doubt MU is earning a reputation as putting out hard working, low maintenance high character guys that will do what it takes to succeed at the NBA level. That can only help recruiting going forward. Kudos to Lazar, Buzz and the entire program. Well done.

Awesome that he called Todd back! Such a humble individual.

Avenue Commons

The trend in professional sports will continue to be that character counts. In light of Michael Vick, Ben Roethlisberger, etc. that public has had it with bad character guys. They reflect poorly on their organizations and their leagues.

Just ask Lance Stephenson. There was a time he was touted as "the next LeBron."

Two words that always come to my mind when I think of Lazar are, Class Act, and this article backs up those thoughts.
