Attendance for 2009-2010 10th best

Marquette's home attendance came was 10th highest per game, (15,617 per game) Bucky was 6th.  Its funny to see just how little draw some of the Big East schools must have.  Cuse was 2nd (22,152) and Louisville 3rd (19,397) yet the Big East averaged only 11,000 per game.  Overall it is still a good sign considering what the expectations were coming into the season.  I didn't think we would be in the top 10 this year.  I'm looking for a full list but here are a couple links.

Part of that has to do with several schools having small arenas.

The Joyce Center(ND) is only 9800 seats
The RAC(Rutgers) is only 8000 seats
Gampel Pavillion(UConn) is just over 10000 seats
Villanova and St. John's played games on campus at arenas that are just over 6000 seats.

Actually Depaul wasn't to bad they were actually one of the better teams in the conference; 1 spot above ND, 2 above PC, 4 above Cinci.  USF had a stealer 4,884 per game.

That's great! I actually thought we had a little bit of a lousy home Big East schedule, as far as days of the week were concerned. It seems to me that we didn't have as many weekend games as we usually do and that is when we generally get a lot of our most raucous crowds.

Although, no matter what day of the week it is, nothing beats going to an MU game!

Attendance is tickets sold in any sport, any level & any program. It's not that hard.

Thank You, it's always tickets sold. MU doesn't give away free tickets anymore to boost that number.

Good point, and we actually IMPROVED in ranking over last year (#14 last year), despite the fact attendance by the numbers was down (averaged 16,239 vs. 2009).  4 straight years in the top 15 nationally...not bad for a school that produces only about 1600 graduates a year and has an undergraduate student body of about 7000.

I don't think the decline (about 800 per game) should be taken as a real problem; in fact, if you look nationally, versus 2008, attendance was down across the board at most places (except Kentucky).  It's probably indicative of a less weekend-centric schedule (compared to the 3 prior years especially).

Hey, MU beat the Milwaukee Bucks in the Bradley Center.  They only averaged 15,108 this year.

2007-08 season MU ranked #14, not last year. The 2008-09 season MU was ranked #10.

Indeed avg attendance/game went down 800 from the previous year.

This really surprises me.  I figured it'd go UP 800, due to the $99 ticket packages that SOLD OUT.  (IIRC, that's 1000 tickets.  ??)

Now, of course not all those 1000 seats were to new people who never went to games before.  But they certainly didn't go to all 17+ games the previous year.

Apparently, that increase in season ticket sales must have been offset by an even greater downward force .. the economy?  Really?   In reality, a MU game provides one of the cheapest sports entertainment events in town .. $15 gets you in .. almost the same as a movie ticket.

I'm guessing the biggest downward pressure was that MU had very few Saturday games this year, which always bring big crowds.

I think the biggest counter to that is that over the past 5+ years, MU has performed consistently well, meaning the past 5 years worth of fans have rarely left disappointed with the product on the floor and the entertainment it provided.  (A testament to MU's program as a whole.)

I imagine Season ticket sales will hold steady .. and the year end average will depend more on Saturday games than "known" players like Lazar.

The ranking is nice, but the volume is how MU helps pay for Athletic Department operations.  800 down per game is unfortunate and means real dollars.  I'm sure the economy, the initial expectations of the team, the home schedule all played into it.  Let's hope we can have net growth this year.

MU has actually outdrawn the Bucks 3 years in a row.  I'm guessing that will change next year, due to the Bucks playoffs this year.

And they dont offer special deals. Gotta pay the athletes somehow.

So, the usual sell-out of UW accounted for about 240 of the 800...and I am sure the Tuesday night UWM game of 14,244 did not help the average either.  So the local rival draw killed MU more than anything.

NCST was not the OOC attraction folks expected at 15,803.  The rest was due to the lack of prime BE weekend game assignments on ESPN with the loss of the amigos.

How much did MU and ND playing at DePaul help them?

Well, yes they do.

MU doesn't give away free tickets anymore. Your right a free ticket giveaway is a sold ticket. I was at a meeting last year and they stop giving away free-tickets. MU is pushing group tickets to, example Buzz's Bunch or MPS day.

Attendance normally picks up if MU is ranked for a couple of weeks.  We were not ranked all year, I don't think.  Plus, having few big games on weekends hurts a lot. 
Given the economy, the low expectations for the team, and the above factors, this bodes well for MU and for attendance in the coming years.  This year the team has little expectations outside of the fans who are showing up anyway.  If we have a good season and are ranked some, then the following year (2011-2012) will see the uptick in attendance from the non-hardcore fan base; especially if we are ranked coming into the season.
