The other site is saying/inferring someone will come on as a walk-on. Makes sense for Hahn.

I got that exact opposite from reading that thread. Someone was hoping for that, and IWB linked to a buzzer sound.

Could Noreen be coming in as a walk-on?  With a 4.0 GPA and a perfect ACT score wouldn't it be fairly safe to assume he could get a full ride academically at Marquette and then walk-on to the basketball team, essentially giving us 14 scholarship players, but 1 is on an academic scholarship?  I know people say that division 1 athletes don't pay their own way through school even if they have the coin to do it, but in this case he wouldn't be paying anything either.

Not saying that I expect it, but it could happen, couldn't it?

esotericmindguy

Nope, walk-on players cannot be on academic scholarships....its been discussed before and I know someone posted that it's against rules.

or maybe Tony Greiss... can't remember who was playing at the same time.

What, they all look the same to you?  Racist  :P

Not likely at MU, although it happens 13 times a year at Harvard. (and Cornell)
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

I don't think that that's exactly what was posted.  If that was the rule, would Forzena really be turning down what would probably be almost full (if not completely full) academic ride just so he could be an (essentially) non playing member of the team?

Why would he get an academic scholarships? There are plenty of smart kids at MU that don't receive scholarships.  If he was offered a full academic scholarship then I believe he did give it up to be on the team.

I'm 99% sure you cannot receive an academic scholarship and play basketball; Just like you can't get a track scholarship and play basketball. There is a pecking order, Football I believe is #1 so you could get a basketball scholarship and walk-on to a football team.

Other way around.  Since football is number 1, you could play on the football team and walk on to the basketball team.  The scholarship would count against the football team.

Yes, that's probably right... I didn't listen to the "buzzer" initially. It does sound like the Family Fued "X" buzzer, and not a correct answer/game over buzzer.

I had gotten the impression from an earlier post that Forzena is the type of guy that makes "smart kids" seem average.  I don't know though, just the impression that I got...

You can get an academic scholarship and play basketball.  You have to justify it pretty clearly to the NCAA though.  (ie, his academic credentials are similar to those receiving the same amount of scholarship.)

cheebs09

I think one of the reasons that Noreen couldn't get an academic scholarship is he's missed a certain deadline. At least, I think I read that on here when the topic previously came up.

So in MU's case it probably means they could justify giving a basketball player an Ignatius Scholarship worth about 9K or so, not a full ride with room and board.

If he has a 36 ACT and a 4.0 GPA Marquette can completely justify a full ride, although if he missed the deadline (as it was alluded to earlier) he may have to take partial scholarship and reapply at another time or something.

No matter what, this is ridiculously unlikely. The kid is good enough and smart enough to do what he wants though.

unless thing's have changed (i graduated in 2005), as far as i knew Marquette only gave out 5 full rides a year, and they were service scholarships.  on top of maintaining a certain gpa, you had to perform like 150 community service hours/semester.  Otherwise, they just had the difference levels of ignatius merit scholarships, which maxed out at about 50% of tuition.

Guys...Noreen will not be here as a walk-on.  He has high, D1 options.

Hahn might accept a walk-on role if he doesn't have such options, but he wants to play high-level ball.

South Florida's board is silent as well, waiting.....
