The thread about Jae Crowder wearing #32 got me wondering about what uni numbers the other new guys will wear next season. There are some pics of Vander wearing a #2 MU jersey so my assumption is that will be his number (sidenote: when I hear #2 Vander Blue, I can't help but think of #4 Bobby Orr). Any word on the other guys' numbers?

Based on a few pics that I've seen (from HS, AAU, etc) I remember seeing Jones wearing #24, Newbill wearing #25 (a number that I believe is available) and Reggie Smith in #5, #11 and #32.

For no apparent reason, my predictions would be Jones #34, Newbill #25 and Smith #13.

Yes, I'm bored and killing time but I'm "working" from home today. What do you expect?

My predictions,

Smith #11
Jones #34
Newbill #9
Crowder #32 (I would say #24 but I heard he was wearing 32)
Vander #2

I don't think 9 is a legal number. I think I saw him wearing 25 in a youtube video so that wouldn't surprise me.

I may be mistaken, but didn't Jay-May switch from #22 to #25?  I recalled thinking at the time that he was leaving #22 for his buddy Vander once he committed (which he did shortly thereafter).

I vaguely remember reading on this board that the #2 jersey was one that they had available at one of the elite camps so players could pose in an MU jersey.  I also vaguely remember someone posting pictures of other players in the #2 jersey.  The point of the posts (assuming I'm not just mis-remembering)was that the photo of a player in a #2 jersey doesn't mean he will wear #2 at Marquette.  Anyone else remember this or know anything about this?

Maymon was originally listed as #22 on the MU website but that was switched to #25 prior to the season. Not sure if it had anything to do with Vander or the possibility of retiring McNeal's number or was just a typo.

#20 is retired for Maurice Lucas.

The ref needs to be able to give the numbers to the scorers table on one hand.

A block on someone wearing number 25 would correspond to the ref using his right hand to signal 2, 5, with a block.

NBA does not have this rule

It's still only illegal in Alabama, Texas, and Mississippi.

Refs aren't smart enough to use two hands to identify a single number.

I wonder if that is one of Buzz's recruiting pitches?  Maybe that is why we get recruits from the south.

Right.  That's why Steve Novak wore it.

The players JERSEYS are retired, not the numbers.

Well, Mr. Know-it-all, the number was actually retired during Novak's career. He was allowed to finish his career wearing it. Same goes with Amo and Earl Tatum's #43.

Dude, whatever.  They don't retire numbers.

That may very well be true, but I thought that they generally took the pic from the "Marquette" up, so to speak, or they held a basketball to block the number like in Jamail's pic (below). I just assumed that they showed Vander in #2 because that was going to be his number.
