the kid can play.  i have a feeling that he could lead mu in the comming years and be the next great warrior.

HoopsMalone

Great situation for him to come in and learn from Butler and DJO.  If he doesn't show energy now, he is going to have to bring it every day in practice against those guys.  Great pick up though by Buzz.

PGsHeroes32

he will just help make us even more scary in the next 2-3 years
Lazar picking up where the BIG 3 left off....

I have only watched him twice now but the kid can shoot.  People worried that we have lost a lot of outside shooting (Zar, Coobs, Acker)... well, we have a nice shooter in Jones.  I think he gets some playing time next year, at least as a spot up shooter when people zone us or pack in the "D".

Probably has a way to go on "D" and some other areas, but next year he can still add some depth to this team as a shooter.

At first I thought that EWill and Jones will be fighting each other for playing time but I don't think so now.  It seems like Jones is more of a 2/3 and EWill more of a 4/3.  Does this sound right to people?

PGsHeroes32

Yeah Jones plays more guard and uses his size there. Him and DJO should be great together in 2 years. Jones and Crowder will find PT based on their ability to shoot the ball
Lazar picking up where the BIG 3 left off....

MuMark

Yeah Williams is more of an inside player and Jones is a wing.

JJ did a real nice Wesley Matthews imitation today...... ;D

Jamail stepped up the aggressiveness today - great to see.  Yes - if you had to define those two players as either a guard or forward, Jones is a guard, Erik is a forward...

Okonji and Findlay are winning in the other semi-final... almost halftime.  Looks like we'll have a rematch of Montverde/Findlay - Jamail's squad won the first one on their home court.. but Findlay had a couple of injuries, including Tristan Thompson in that one.. excellent game coming up tomorrow - 12:30pm central on ESPN.
The portal is NOT closed.

Doctor V

I agree he is more of a 2/3, and he seems capable of fighting for some playing time right away

This really makes me wish crowder is more of a 4/5, because the 1-3 spots seem more than complete with Cadougan, Blue, DJO, Buycks, Jones, Smith, Newbill

That hopefully leaves 6 guys at the 4/5 with
Butler, Fulce, Otule, Mbao, Crowder, Williams

Very well balance with a ton of talent, yet little experience and many question marks. Overall I love it

I'm just as excited as anyone else to see how next years squad plays out in terms of minutes and production..but Jones is playing against other high school players in that game. Granted it is a good field of teams in that tournament, but I feel like too many people are placing expectations on unknown qualities (see Erik Williams).

I understand that people like the way he played in the game today, but as someone said on the other JJ board..it is amazing on how everyone falls in love w/someone after one good game. All I am saying is that let's see how it pans out in the early going for the next season, I hope your all right about how good our freshman will turn out to be next season, but I would like to see more..meaning next season.

A plus for Jamil is the fact that he already has experience living away from home, and playing ball for a school that runs a program like a college team would.  That should give him a step up next year.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

I don't know if you are reading another thread in this response but I don't see anyone in this thread saying the guy will start next year or anything crazy like that.  I was just surprised, given his size, the shooting capability.  People in this thread mention things like "in the future" which doesn't mean next year.  I think if he provides 5-10 mpg next year with the ability to drain threes that will be a big help.

I don't know what I'm reading either. Its Friday afternoon and I can't wait to get out of work. It will be exciting to have a young team with a lot of unknowns next year.

Buzz has said he wants to run 9.5 guys so right now id go.........butler, djo, buycks, junior, blue, crowder, otule, fulce, jones those 9 getting solid PT. Then ewill and mbao if they are ready and able. Thats 11 guys with decent PT to 9 a game I would say.

I really wouldnt mind JB and DJO playing basically jimmy and lazar minutes from this year and then roll the other 7 or so guys on match ups/whose hot to equal out playing time

Many teams do well off "line changes" and I think we have a team able to do that, but dont take away from JB or DJO.

Jimmy actually led the entire team in minutes played this year 1165 to Lazar's 1097.  Kubbie was third, DJO fourth.

Modification for grammar.  Sorry, Mrs. Strom (sixth grade teacher).

PGsHeroes32

yeah, exactly. Thats why I am saying that with this deep but inexperienced team we should basically do line changes, but leave JB and DJO in as long as they are able to and out of Foul trouble(Foul trouble shouldnt hurt DJO much ever)

Yeah, when you're looking for guys to play most of the game, its good to know that they're already shown that they can handle it.

Alot of scoring talent on next years teams.  The newcomers that will get playing time are the ones that can play defense, i.e., defend, rebound, not make mental mistakes.

PGsHeroes32

Thats why I think Crowder will suprise and play alot, maybe even start. Hes 6'6 so not a monster by any means but he rebounded great in JUCO like 10 ppg or something so to think he can get 7 a game is not a huge stretch, he can score from outside and play solid d. So i defintily think Crowder plays alot.

From watching the game today, Jamil Jones looks a lot more like a shooting guard than he does a small foreward.  His body reminds me of a young Wesley Matthews.  It will be really nice to have a 6'4-6'5 guard which is what his height probably is, (not 6'6 like he is listed everywhere) as opposed to a back court filled with 6'1-6'2 players like Blue, DJO, and Buycks.

Wait... you mean guys listed at 6'6 aren't supposed to be centers???? What the Hell.

PGsHeroes32

I definitly see Jamail as a Wesley Matthews type if he can drive the way he showed today. Wesley had a solid outside shot and strove off driving because of his good size for a guard. DJO and Vander are not small for guards with Vander being 6'3 and DJO is around 6'2 but has proven he has the hops. We will definitly be bigger all around next year than this year, but I agree we still need that 6'9-6'10 talent.

No, but i thought i heard something he may not be eligable and hes probably the smallest of our guards and the worst shooter I believe so i think he may spend alot of next year watching. Newbill shoots way better and he probably wont play a ton.
