I love listening to any show Brian Hanley is on during March Madness. Since he is a proud Marquette alum, he makes a point of bringing our school quite a bit.  He has our players/coaches on the program every year.   We should add him to our famous almuni board.  The second best Chicago media personality (a close 2nd after Mark Suppelsa).

Brian Hanley is a great guy.  Robmufan and myself went on a tour of the score studios once followed by a trip to the Billy Goat Tavern.  Both Rob and myself had on Marquette t-shirts so Hanley bought us a beer.  Buzz had just been hired at the time and Hanley seemed pretty excited about his recruiting abilty but didn't know much more than that.  We talked MU hoops with him for about 5 minutes.  Despite being the Bulls beat reporter for the Sun-Times he still holds a grudge against Kirk Hinrich.

We also got some love from Doug Buffone whose daughter went to Marquette.

As he should, Kirk smoked us... didn't he drop like 30 on us?  Not sure, but I still have this image of him burying three's from the corner.

I couldn't tell you how many he finished with.  I never saw the end of that game and never once looked at the stats.  I don't think I even read the paper the next day.  Straight to recycling!

After hearing that interview, I must say, what a great person Buzz seems to be.  I'm a Husky fan but, win or loose, I will be a Marquette fan for at least as long as he is there.  Much props to your coach and players.

Buzz is great.  He has definitely sent the doubters packing.  There are a few "feel good" stories about the guy too that we might hear about during the tourney.  I am not sure how much you will hear in the UW game.  The IT name story and the Hayward and Pondexter (sp?) teammates story will probably get the most airtime.

Thanks for the compliment/comment.  Almost all of us here feel the exact same way, yet a few cynics and skeptics remain.  I know Buzz has a lot of respect for Lorenzo Romar, has made several mentions about him being one of the class guys in the college coaching ranks.

That Iowa comment on the end kind of threw me. I know it was just joking around but the idea doesn't even merit a casual reference. Does anyone take seriously the notion that Buzz would consider leaving for IOWA? Huuuuge step down.

The interesting thing is how quickly things can change.

A little more than a decade ago, Marquette was a huuuuge step down from Iowa.  Thats why they were able to attract a big-name up-and-coming coach like Steve Alford (widely viewed as heir apparent to Bobby Knight) and MU had to choose among an unproven assistant, a low-major coach or a major program washout looking to rehabilitate his coaching resume.  It wasn't even a possibility that MU could attract a coach with Alford's pedigree.

Monroe looks like he'll be the type of NBA player who gets GMs and coaches fired. All the talent in the world but simply lacks desire.

I think Monroe is the third most TALENTED (not saying the best) player in this draft behind only John Wall and Evan Turner. Great, great passer. Runs the floor well. Huge body. Definitely an NBA player for as long as he wants. For his sake I hope he wants it. GTown big men historically are good NBA players, though.

What a coincidence that a decade ago MU chose A (an unproven assistant) who now is well on his way to becoming C (major program washout looking to rehabilitate his coaching resume). He was a better choice then than he would be now.

Right I don't disagree with you and things certainly could change but RIGHT NOW that would be a huge step down and considering all the circumstances I don't even see how that would merit a reference in an interview.  It just seemed odd.

Do you mean the the same Mark Suppelsa who asked a women whether she saw people jumping out of buildings in New York on 9/11? He just happened to ask the women the same question twice while she was in the news studio live. Oops, I forgot to mention it was within a week of 9/11 and he mentioned her family was in studio numerous times. Oh yeah, that guy is a real class act!
