We always talk about how big men take time to develop etc etc.....This also occurs at the next level, as Thabeet has been assigned to the D League. Ouch!

I bet he wishes he would have stayed for his senior year now.

Anytime you are drafted that high in the NBA draft, you made the right choice.

CTWarrior

He's the modern day Jim McIlvaine.  Great shot blocker with no other discernable basketball skills.
Calvin:  I'm a genius.  But I'm a misunderstood genius.
Hobbes:  What's misunderstood about you?
Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.

For what, to be the number one pick?  He was #2 in last year's draft.

Salary for this year is $4.5 million.  Three year $13 million guaranteed.

If he never plays in NBA again, which I doubt, the guy is set for life.

You'd think so but if he's anything like some of those idiots he will spend it on Escalades and bling and we'll be paying his welfare...

Didn't he have a broken jaw?

mugoose

actually the escalade wouldnt be a poor choice in that salary bracket.

$7 million after taxes, with another 70 years of living, only about $116K per year, would not necessarily say set for life.

Exactly!

He's got enough money now to live off of for the rest of his life.

What the hell were the Grizzlies thinking though? They could've had Tyreke Evans, Harden, Johnny Flynn, Rubio, Steph Curry, Brandon Jennings.

They must have a really dumb GM

Nice spin, but you get the point.  Please, with a 2% interest rate that's 140K a year.  Lets take half of that for whatever tax, expense, etc, so that's 70K.  Add that to your 116K and that will do till he reaches the 94 year age mark.

77ncaachamps

Guaranteed $$$? I wouldn't turn something like that down.

He's a smart guy so I'm sure he'll be using his money in wise ways.

The good news is we can look forward to catching his epic battles with Brian Butch and Greg Steimsma on NBA TV.

Butch, to his credit, just put up 30 points and 24 boards in a game this week.

I watched all of about 2 minutes of D-League game on NBA TV about a month ago(Butch's team was actually playing) and there was nobody at the game. I mean I didn't expect even half the building to be full, but I thought maybe 2-3k would be in attendance. Heck, there was less than 300 people there.

Thw swing only plays well in MadTown.

Maybe he'll sign with MU!

In all honesty, not our player; I don't care. How much is Wes making and how can I get some of that?

So long as he doesn't blow it on stupid stuff (unlikely), gets a good financial adviser, and makes some wise investments (nothing too fancy), that money will go a lot further than $116k/yr.

Thabeet has probably paid more taxes in one year then you'll pay in your entire life.

I realize quite a few players have made some poor financial decisions but is the welfare comment really neccessary? I highly doubt there are too many former NBAers collecting welfare....bankrupt? Yes......welfare? No.

Mike Tyson, Lenny Dykstra, Tony Gwynn, Johnny Unitis, Antoine Walker...  All guys from major sports who have paid "more taxes in one year than [I'll] pay in [my] entire life" and are bankrupt.  If you are trying to say paying millions in taxes justifies squandering the other millions of dollars you keep and making it ok then to be on welfare because you have paid into it, I disagree with you...

Do these guys really go on welfare, or are we just assuming that?

I would be shocked if they were on actual welfare. Broke? Yes. Welfare? Wow. I'm not sure about that.

EDIT: Tony Gwynn? Really? Isn't he still working as an analyst and part time hitting coach? I doubt he's on welfare.

This is getting taken much further than it should.  The welfare comment was more for humor than fact, if it offended, I apologize.  I should have said it amazes me how some of these guys make so much money, more money than most of us ever will, and manage to blow it all.  This is of course not limited to basketball players, or pro athletes in general.  It was also not a direct shot at Thabeet who, as I understand, is an intelligent man.  I will choose my words more carefully next time...
