This game would be over now if the refs hadn't missed the obvious goaltend on Jr.'s lay-up in the first half.
"Give 'Em Hell, Al"

TallTitan34

Refs have been brutal in all of college basketball this year.  That's the fifth missed goaltending call I've seen in the last 2 weeks.

Complete joke.

schubert33

I didn't think when Acker got fouled it was on the ground, that would have been a goaltend called right.

MUCrew

The analyst was saying that it's a rule in college that if the ball is on it's way up and hits the glass and continues it's way up, it's fair play.

If true, that's gotta be the dumbest rule I've heard.

Blackhat

Cadougs shot it off the top block, if that ball was still going up after hitting the backboard it'd be a 20 ft ricochet.

Sawsi

How is that even possible that the ball would still be going up after hitting the backboard?  You would have to be right underneath throwing the ball straight up and then grazing the backboard and hoping for it to drop down.

That had to have been the announcer just trying to prove himself right?  Right?  ?-(

It's not about ME,
It's about US.

21Jumpstreet

That announcer was terrible.  Both were goaltends.

romey

I was thinking the same thing, the only time the ball hits the backboard and continues upward is during the Mikan drill!

lab_warrior

The Cadougan layup, that was one HORRENDOUS missed call.  Not even debatable.  And that announcer is an IDIOT for trying to rationalize that it was on its way up AFTER it hit glass.  I took physics...NOT POSSIBLE.

Apparently you didn't do very well  ;D

MR.HAYWARD

ackers deal was over ruled as being on the flooor.  he hits a ft and we win alot of possesions that mattered.  mu wins is all that matters

MUFan11

Junior's drive to the hole on that play was great, can't wait to see more of him in the future.

I thought so as well.  He looked a lot more comfortable out there today.

lab_warrior

Well, if you shoot the ball UPWARD, and there's this phenomenon called GRAVITY, the ball comes back DOWNWARD.

The guy was playing second fiddle to Beth Mowins, what did you expect?

So if I offered you $100 to make a basketball hit the backboard and continue upward, you couldn't make that happen?   ?-(

wall2978

Yes, but it still is possible the ball can go in an upward direction after hitting the backboard

lab_warrior

IT WASN'T.  All you have to do is look at the replay.  Cadougan wasn't Gervin-esque underhanded fingerrolling the thing, so the ball really could have only been on a downward path.

Blackhat

It's definitely possible and there's some shots you need it to keep venturing north especially english shots from your hip but if Cadougan hits the top block and it was still going up,

first of all the guy wouldn't have touched it and

second it'd be a long ricochet to the middle of the paint

and third the video showed it was good/normal touch by Cadougs and on its way down.

TheGym

Just for the record, the announcer was absolutely wrong.  The rule in the NCAA is that it is a goaltend if you get it coming off the glass.  He was a moron on that calland was able to keep his consistency throughout the entire game.

wall2978

But to say it is IMPOSSIBLE is radiculous

lab_warrior

Okay okay okay.  Fine.  My point is on that particular play, it was impossible for the ball to be going upward.

By the way, the announcer in question (Jim Spanarkel) was a damn good college ballplayer.  All-American at Duke in late 70's and first round NBA draft pick.  (That doesn't make him a good announcer though).

You're right - I pulled this off the NCAA's basketball rules pdf:
QuoteArt. 3. When the entire ball is above the level of the ring during a field-goal
try and contacts the backboard, it is considered to be on its downward flight.
In such a case, it is goaltending when the ball is touched by a player.
