Good "Bubble" day for Marquette
« on: February 20, 2010, 06:40:32 PM »
All in all, it has been a good day for Marquette since a good deal of bubble teams have lost...

Illinois loses at Purdue
Seton Hall loses at WVU
Siena loses at Butler (important if Siena does not win their conference tourney)
Mississippi loses to Florida in a home game (this is kind of a wash because both teams are on bubble)
South Florida loses to St. John's at home by 16
Georgia Tech loses at Maryland
Charlotte loses to Xavier at home by 14
Virgina loses at Clemson by 23
USC loses at Wash St.

USC is near bubble territory...

Was 73 in RPI
Was 8-5 in PAC-10
Beat Tenneesee and Cal, and Washington twice

USC is under self-imposed sanctions and ineligible for post-season play.

Aah... that is what Hayward was saying.  Got it!

This is why I'm less concerned with the tournament than maybe I should be.  Night after night, there are teams trying to play their way out of the tournament, so all MU has to do is win some games here.

While the bubble watch is fun, MU will either play their way in or not in the next few weeks.  I have a sense that we won't be too close to the edge once the BE tourney is over, either way.  I think 6 BE teams have already punched or nearly punched their ticket (Louisville included).  Our job is to be the next one in.  Wins over Cinci and Hall are key stepping stones in that process.  11 conference wins and we are in, 9 and we're not.  My 2 cents.

Yep, bottom line is that we need to beat our bubble mates (and others).  Need W's.  First up, Cincy.

I would not say that Louisville has punched their ticket. Their only significant resume win is over Syracuse. While that win is huge, I believe their next best win is USF.

All fine and dandy, but we need to go out and get a big W on the road today.

Interesting about the Siena game. We are going to probably be the last team or two in from the BE, so these tiny conference tournaments and an upset of the clear number 1 team in those conferences, can cost teams like MU a spot. It would be horrible if say Cleveland State beats Butler in the Horizon league tournament, along with Northern Iowa, and Gonzaga losing their tourneys. While unlikely, there's not many teams like Marquette (being about the 7th or 8th team from a conference hoping to get in) that could get hurt more by these b/s schools potentially getting a bid, that will storm the court and proceed to get rocked in the first round.

I agree with is topic.  This is a really big game since both these teams are trying to play in.  Winning has a slight edge.  Winning for us at Cincy is a little more impressive too than Cincy winning at home.  Should be fun...I think we walk out with a win.  Win by I dont know.....6?  is that fair?  The only thing I disagree with is that bubble list, just because you can add our loss this week on there (it may already, I just didnt see it).  There are a lot of teams trying to fight their way in...many are going to lose games in the next few weeks, so I dont know if its completely fair yet to jump on taems losing.  all in all though, a loss is a loss, and for us, every loss for other teams is good news for Marquette.  It was said perfectly a few replies ahead of me....we will win our way in or lose our way out.

The upside is that 3-4 of the PAC-10's usual bids are available.

Is USC eligible for their conference tourny?  Could they theoretically win their tourny and block a spot for another Pac-10 team?

Pac 10 is unbelievably terrible this year anyways, so who cares about them out there?!
