I think that is what makes the Catholic league Idea so intriguing.  You could have a much more geographically diverse conference thatn any of the traditional power conferences.

St. John's is far and away the biggest school on that list, and still has an enrollment under 20,000.  We would be third, just behind "Saint" if that means Louis.  That adds up to getting televised on public access.

Creighton has a pretty good program out of the Missouri Valley. If they were in a better conference they have all the resources to compete at a high level.

If this happened I would remove myself from Marquette basketball only to relieve myself of the pain of having to watch us slide from our current plateau of being a program who is competing across the country for the nation's top talent to a becoming a program once again who is fighting Illinois State for Mark Anglavar a 2 star prospect who is a good free throw shooter and spot of three point specialist.  I went to school during those days and the Bradley was sparsely filled and the product on the court and the quality of teams that came to play us were not pretty.

Never said it was a good idea, simply said that it was interesting what potential teams would be included.  I posted this not to say it was a good idea, its just that in other threads today people spoke of a catholic league, so i decided to give a potential picture of what that league would most likely look like, for better, or worse.

Horrible idea as a conference but it could have some great support as a tournament. I would love having the top 8 teams play in a double-elimation style tourney. Preferably some place warm or popular like MSG.

Geographic Disaster akin to the Sun Belt. No BCS conference spreads across more than two time zones. This would be spread across four.

You left out ND because of football, OK, their football team is an Independent, but without a Big East, where are their other sports going to play? This is one of the problems with people who have this romantic ideal of an all-Catholic league because they don't think it through all the way. I imagine a lot of this sentiment is either Chicago-area alums who maybe went to hs in an all-Catholic conference like the Chicago Catholic League, Suburban Catholic Conference, or ESCC, or from alums of Catholic schools elsewhere who wish they could have.

You say "Hawaii" and I ask you when was the last time that Hawaii seriously competed for anything? Logistically, Hawaii has a minimum 4 or 5-hour flight there and a 4 or 5-hour flight back for every road game. Tell me that doesn't wear on a team during the course of a season. Rick Majerus has said SLU is disadvantaged playing in a league where half the teams are in Philadelphia or further East. That's only about a 2-hour flight.

You say "Greater exposure" and I point to Conference USA 1995-2005, a geographically-disparate conference that was arguably made for TV with teams in mid-sized to large TV markets with little else in common. I give just as much of a rat's ass about St. Mary's as I did about TCU or UAB or East Carolina when we were conference rivals.
