This is where my mind was when Crean left.  Aim high, go for an established coach, not an assistant, we're back so no need to settle, at least not that quickly.

That was always my concern with going with Buzz.  So far, he's done very well and I'm pleased.  I just didn't think the risk was necessary.

This columnist is basically saying something similar for USC.  Now that they're back as one of the better programs, hire accordingly.  We'll see how it works out for SC

I guess it really doesn't matter anymore, but who should MU have contacted that they didn't?

Benny B

Even with the NCAA about to come down, USC Football is much more of a draw to coaching candidates than Marquette Basketball ever will be.  As a matter of fact, even Tennessee Football is probably more of a draw than MU.

Maybe someone else can verify this, but my understanding was that no less than two "established" coaches were contacted and both turned the MU job down.  USC Football shot for the stars and landed a coach from a perennial Top 25 BCS school because they have that luxury.

When you aim too high, you miss the target completely.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Guys like Chris Lowrey and Brian McKillop (sp?) may have been slightly less risky but their ceilings were deemed to be much lower by MU's administration. I knew nothing of Buzz Williams at the time but shared the view that those being mentioned who had head coachng experience were distinctly underwhelming. I was glad we swung for the fences. I still am. Maybe in 5 years I'll wish it could have been a Lowery or McKillop but I seriously doubt it.

I'd also say that comparing USC football circa 2010 to MU bball in 2008 is absurd.

This is hilarious.  College Football is NOT College Basketball and USC is NOT Marquette.  Aim high and when no one calls you back or laughs in your face then you'll know you've made it.
