Game 13: West Virginia

Coach Buzz Williams would take as many Jimmy Butlers as possible.

Unfortunately for him and his Golden Eagles, he has just one. Their opponent in their Big East opener on Tuesday, however, has quite a few more to hear Williams tell it.

With a starting lineup featuring five players standing at least 6 feet 7 inches tall, and 6-9 Devin Ebanks now running the point, it's clear the No. 6 West Virginia Mountaineers (10-0 overall, 1-0 Big East) are going to present matchup problems like never before for the smallish Golden Eagles.

man I had no idea Ebanks is running point...this could be ugly indeed

Jimmy Butler will be on him.  Should be a great matchup.

Golden Avalanche

If Marquette plays defense like they did in Orlando, save the final 15 minutes against Florida State, they could force West Virginia into some jump-shot phases during the game. The 'Eers aren't a great shooting team, they rely on second chances and transition, so perhaps we get them on an off day to keep it close.

They are the 4th best offensive rebounding team in the country and as we all know rebounding is a weak area for us so even if they do miss they will get alot of dunks and layups of their own misses.

Free throw shooting can be an issue for them....too bad we don't have enough players to take a bunch of fouls and take our chances at the line.

That just proves WV doesn't have a point guard.

I wouldn't go that far.  Darryl Bryant was last years starting point guard, and he started the first 8 games of the year at the point.  He still averaged over 20 minutes a game.  Joe Mazzulla was going to be the PG last year before getting hurt and played a lot off the bench two years ago.  He gets 9 minutes a game as well.

Saying Ebanks is the PG sort of masks the reality of how they actually play.  He's only been playing the position the last few games as a response to how Bryant played early in the year.  But even in the games where was the "point", WVU has had either Mazzulla or Bryant in the game 50% of the time.

I keep remembering Huggins' face during the game last year and I fear that this game could be really, really ugly.  Huggins was pissed, and I suspect he's out to make a point and get revenge.  Hopefully our guys will play well and spoil his party.
Never wrestle with a pig.  You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.

Looking forward to the Mbao Ebanks matchup at point guard.

they seem to crash the offensive boards with 4 players which means their transition defense might be suspect.  That means if we somehow get our fair share of rebounds we can get out in transition against them.

They also foul a lot.  We need to get to the line a lot in this game.

If WVU turns it over a lot and we get in the bonus early in each half, I like our chances.  If not, we are going to have a long night I'm afraid.

Our ability to rebound on the defensive end will not be helped by the fact that Butler will spend a lot of time on Ebanks.  Fulce is going to need to make a huge effort on the glass.
