Question re: coaches/transfers - do they ask about past?
« on: December 21, 2009, 01:30:06 PM »
I'm sure there are some of you out there close to college hoops and processes that go on behind the scenes. So, I have a question -

When a player leaves a team and goes to transfer somewhere else, do the teams trying to re-recruit the departed player ever call the former team/coach/administration and inquire "hey, why is so-and-so no longer there"? Can they do that w/in rules? What info can/can't prospective schools get on the player?

You should know.  You lasted what?  4 games at MU?  ;)

You are right. But I didn't want to play in NBA. I wanted to play in pro Israeli league. Much less violent.

I would imagine that both sides sign agreements to not speak about a particular person beyond what is agreed to in the scholarship release and adjoining press release.  In much the same way that a person who has been terminated from his/her job will sometimes be asked not to speak over the terms of their dismissal.
For MU to say anything else to any program would open the door for various lawsuits, defamation of character specifically is what I would guess.
I think anything beyond "yes, he did play 9 games for our team", would be off-limits.
I'm like a turtle, sometimes I get run over by a semi.

Officially...yes.  My guess is there all sorts of unofficial lines of communication that are used however.

Agreed, but I'm sure coaches go "off the record" to encourage or discourage their friends in the profession regarding possible transfers.

That's what I would think. The coaching fraternity is pretty tight so people have to know what they are getting into, especially after a track-record has been established with a kid.

Is there any case where that doesn't apply?  The collective knows all.
