Notre Dame Admits It...
« on: December 17, 2009, 11:44:03 AM »
...the big conferences make more money through their television contracts than ND does with NBC.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4750901

"Swarbrick acknowledged that the major football conferences make even more money from their own media contracts than the $9 million Notre Dame is paid annually by NBC for the football rights."

So let's put this outdated notion to rest finally...

"In the Big Ten, TV and radio rights fees generate $20 million a year for the schools."

20mil divided by 11 or 20mil for each?

Per school.

They get north of $15 million per year per school from television.

This is because of the Big Ten Network that was formed a few years ago, but it still doesn't factor in licensing, merchandise, etc that they also don't have to share like the conference folks do.

So he's not giving the full picture of what it financially means to be independent, but no question that the Big Ten Network money helps the Big Ten schools.  Of course, many of those Big Ten deals are coming up in another year and we'll see what kind of money they get from the MSO's this time around.  That will be interesting to watch as the ratings are not that great.

Well, that is probably another reason why they are looking at expansion and the championship game rights that would go with it.

ND should just join the Big 11, then there could be 12 teams with the chance to get the crap kicked out of them in a BCS game every year

Pics of the ND-MU "finger" shirt would be so appropriate now.

ND joining the Big East for football would give the Big East the marquee name it needs since Miami left it.  I'd rather see them stay in the BE.

Besides, supposedly a big factor for MU joining the BE was that Notre Dame, Marquette, and DePaul would increase the Big East Network's chances of getting into cable packages in Chicago.  If Notre Dame left the Big East for basketball, penetrating the Chicago market is less realistic for the BE network.  I hope we and Louisville have proven especially competitive enough to stay in the BE though.

Can you play football in the Big Ten and basketball in the Big East?

The Big Ten would never allow that.

The problem with them joining the Big East entirely is the financial hit they would take...unless the BE completely caves and lets them keep their NBC money.  The Big East is by far the least lucrative of the BCS conferences.

Actually, letting ND keep their NBC money is not a bad idea.  It could be a good long term investment.  The Big East would still get TV money for road conference games on TV.  The Big East is by far the least lucrative conference, but a historically great program who gets national attention is what the BE needs.

I have been going back and forth with a friend of mine who is a UConn alum.  He thinks the BE should give Notre Dame an ultimatum...join the BE in football and you can keep your NBC money, or we are going to drop you for the other sports.  My argument is the BE needs ND more for football than ND needs the BE.

Look at the BE's bowl tie ins after this year.

#1-BCS
#2-Champs Sports
#3-Yankee Bowl
#4-Meinecke
#5-International
#6-Papajohns.com

This is just pathetic...and remember this is *with* the chance of getting Notre Dame.
