Who will we count on for the 3
« on: November 19, 2009, 09:37:05 PM »
Now that we’ve closed our recruiting for the Fall, and seem to be looking only for a low post player in the spring I like the talent we’ve put together with only one concern.  That is who will these next few year’s teams count on to shoot the 3.  We’ll graduate Lazer who came in with the rep of being an outside threat and turned into much more.  We’ll also lose Cuby who was decent from 3.  The guys Buzz has recruited all follow the same theme.  Long, athletic players who can play multiple positions.  The problem is none of them come in with a rep as great shooters.  I guess players can improve their outside shot over time.  McNeal certainly did.  But its rare that a guy develops into great outside shooter if he didn’t come in that way.  I don’t think any of these guys have the shot and range that Diener had, leave alone Novak.  And it seems to me that to be an elite team you have to have a guy you can count on game after game to consistently hit the open shots you create for him.  Otherwise teams just pack it in on you and even the best driving teams struggle to get in the lane.

Definate concern. The only one I have read that struggles from the outside is Smith.  Blue, Junior, and Mellow do not necessarily have shooting as a weakness as far as I know.  They aren't Diener and Novak, but I don't think that they will be DJ on a bad night.

I would still rather have a player like Reggie Smith who can give Blue a challenge defensively and athletically in practice than a Scott Christopherson who can drain but would get dominated in practice.

Gimme a big who can defend and rebound in the spring, then in 2011 a Diener-type pure shooter at guard to replace Byucks, a 4 or 5 star swingman to replace Jimmy, and a 4 or 5 star big (finally!) to replace Fulce.  That'd be a squad.  Just wishing...

The thing about this is that it seems like no one excells at shooting the 3 in our recent recruits, but none of them have it as a weakness either.  Personally, I prefer balance.

DJO is supposed to be a decent outside shooter.  Ewilliams is supposed to have a good one as well.  I believe Blue has concentrated on it more in the last year so he may end up being dependable as well.

As for this year, Hayward, JB and DJO will probably be our main 3 point threats... but Cubillian and Buycks (to a lesser extent) can shoot the deep shot as well.  And Acker isn't terrible either.

so... really, I am not worried if anyone pulls up from long as long as it isn't Otule or Mbao.

For what it's worth, I believe Jimmy Butler has yet to miss a 3pt shot while wearing a MU uni....

He is actually 3-7.  0-4 last year, 3-3 this year.

Yeah the 4 from last year snuck up on me as well. All I remembered was how much we wanted him to shoot from range more often I guess I forgot he took any during the year.

I think DJO is the best pure shooter of all the newcomers, but it's not like Buycks looks bad shooting the 3 either.  From what I've heard/read, Vander has no trouble knocking down shots, and Reggie Smith is pretty decent.  I don't know if any of these guys will be snipers out of the  Novak/Diener/Hutchins mode, but I think they'll do okay.  And there will be 4-5 of them to spread the floor and be tougher to defend, too.  Open 3s tend to go in a bit easier.

Huh.  I'll take a 43% shooter.
