Does anyone have a sense of where Bowen and MU stand?  Specifically, was his decommit more of a Vander Blue type of de-commit where he is still strongly considering his original choice?  Or is Marquette just completely out of Bowen's radar?

Not sure.

I was under the impression that this was strictly tied to Dale Layer's departure from the staff.

No inside info, but it appears he is gone.  In Rosiak's blog, he indicates that Bowen said he was not honoring his commitment, which would seem to indicate that he is going elsewhere.  As somebody posted, he was Layer's recruit, and that is why he committed to Marquette.  I expect he will wind up somewhere in the South

I'm just curious, what would Bowen have done if Layer lasted through his freshman year before getting a head coaching job somewhere?

My feeling is he thought Buzz was recruiting over him. I also feel Buzz felt he was going to land better recruits so did not sooth his feelings. We will see if this was a mistake.

You write that as if Bowen was chump change. The kid showed a great amount of skill according to various reports over the summer and really exploded as a high major player. Not sure he is/will be over recruited considering we only have one player for 2010. MU could pick up a similar explode on the scene player in JJ Moore.

Bowen was considered a great get - so I don't think Buzz cooled on the kid or recruited over him.  I just can't believe Buzz did not try to save him.

I suspect buzz did try.  I also think that the Jamail Jones committment had a lot to do with his decommittment as both are in the Wes Mathhews vein of a 2G/SF (on top of Layer's departure).  Would be interesting if Bowen went to Liberty, though I suspect that would be unlikely.

not to knock Bowen or say he is not a high major player but we did get a commit from Jones who is a top 70 recruit and plays the same position.

My guess is that he certainly did.  We don't really know what Buzz did or what he said.

Buzz constantly talks about having a true PG and a true 5 and other then that, every position is interchangeable. I don't buy the argument that once Jones committed, Bowen was always going to leave or that they play the same position so it would have been overload.

The kid's from Florida, his boy left MU, and the SEC is chirping in his ear. Nothing more then that, imo.

However, Bowen's "explosion" was from Liberty U caliber to marginally top 100.

MU still listed in active pursuit of a large number of top 50 candidates for 2010 would presumably would be ahead of Bowen in the depth chart.  And a bunch more for 2011 that might also compete for time when Bowen is a sophomore.

Bowen was a nice get at the time--but its clear that Buzz's sights are set higher right now.

I don't disagree with your overall post here; but, that "exploseion" from Liberty to top 100 is rather significant.  Not too many guys can accomplish that.  Could be that MU's BE status elevated Bowen's ranking... :D
