been reading the basketbawful blog and it is sort of interesting apart from how incredibly big a dork the writer was/is.  Pure Purdue product that is for sure

First google hit = http://www.fanbase.com/Purdue-Boilermakers-Mens-Basketball-1993-94/roster.  There's probably an official one on the purdue site somewhere, too.

Wade for President

Soooooooo confused by this post?!?

The only thing I remember from this team is how they were almost knocked out in the first round of the NCAA tournament... as a 1 seed.  Gosh was Big Dog an animal in college though.

This is a very good story about Mat ten Dam and his roommate.

Same here.

I thought the MUScoop constitution had something about "thou shalt always giveth proper titles to your threads."

Once a warrior always a warrior.. even if the feathers must now come with a beak.

was little matt atool or waht...a decent read only diminished by this dorks ineptitude, sort of like watching a car wreck in slow motion.  A buddy of mine had a class with ten Dam and said he was usually there.  kid was there for 4 years so he obviously got a little more serious about the grades.  Also the story about all 5 teachers calling all on the same day etc. sounds like some journalistic embellishmnet more like they followed up with the teachers and he was doing poorly and the asst coach called. To scare the heck out of the kid or simply to get him going ....  even back then coaches got daily attendence and grade monitoring from professors.

Someone needs to create a shirt that states:

"Don't worry, I'll play Sade - No Ordinary Love"

Gosh this journal is golden.

This might be the best story I have ever read.

tower912

I was having uncomfortable flashbacks, reading about the author cluelessly juggling how many women and afraid to take a chance on any of them.   Talk about self esteem issues.   Hysterical and addicting, however.
Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

It is better to be fearless and cheerful than cheerless and fearful.

farmdaddy

I read two pages at work and knew based on those two pages I had to finish.

Wow. Leitch may have missed the boat on this one.

EDIT: I just read all 17 installments. Really well done.

Regarding my initial thought, the cretins that read deadspin (though I occasionally peruse it myself) probably wouldn't appreciate the author's story.

yeah that is what i get for using yahoo...Matt Ten Dam.

http://www.nytimes.com/1992/11/08/sports/sports-people-basketball-purdue-gets-dutch-star.html

I was stunned when Purdue signed this guy b/c I saw him play several times in high school.  (My wife graduated from the high school MTD attended as an exchange student.)  Due to some issues with eligibiliy, he was not allowed to play on the varsity, so he played JV as a senior.  He was neither impressive nor dominant in any way despite playing against younger and much shorter players.

Now this was at a time when Purdue's teams almost always included a big, strong, slow (usually white) guy.  [See Rowinski, Jim.]  And w/ MTD's enormous size Keady must have thought that he could have MTD play that type of role.

I flashed back to my days at McCormick and thought about having someone MTD's size as a roommate.  It would have seemed like he was standing right on top of you ALL the time.  [And the rooms at Purdue are not much bigger, but they are rectangular rather than pie-shaped.]  That is, if you have never been around a guy that size, it is quite amazing and intimidating.  That is the same reaction I had when I met, ironically, Rik Smits.  He is about a foot or so taller than me, so when I knew I was going to meet him about a marketing proposal during his days with the Pacers, I thought it would be no big deal.  I have been around many people a foot or so shorter than me and that did not seem awkward in any way.  But when you are used to looking at or down at people to suddenly look up more than a foot is really odd.  Then add MTD's bulk to a 7'+ frame.  That room had to seem crowded all the time.

It is FANTASTIC!  He should get published in hard-copy format.

bumpity bump bump bump

I added "Basketbawful" to my RSS Reader this year after reading the "livin large" series.  Their coverage of the NBA was pretty funny, especially during the playoffs.

Anyways, Bawful is back with another summer story.  Figure if you enjoyed "livin' large", you might like this one too.

As someone who is obsessive about playing pick-up basketball, I'm going to enjoy this.

That journal is hilarious.   And turning down sex at 18?   He's got more morals (or a smaller d**k) than me.

this might be the saddest fight ever but for a frame of reference this is the Mat from basketbawful...15 years later in a Muay Thai fight.
