I wouldn't call it backing out on this one.  Him changing his mind has a whole lot to do with the offer not really being there anymore.

Commonly referred to in the business as a "pre-Crean." Thereby giving the recruit an opportunity to matriculate elsewhere. A "Crean" forces an unwelcome student athlete to leave the program after having already been a member of the team.
