Cadougan, Mbao in holding pattern

Due to increased scrutiny of international student-athletes enrolling in summer sessions, neither Junior Cadougan nor Youssoupha Mbao have been able to join the rest of their newly-arrived teammates on campus to this point.

While coach Buzz Williams on Friday afternoon expressed optimism that Cadougan, a Canadian in line to be MU's starting point guard, could be given the all-clear as early as Saturday, it appears as though Mbao might be in store for a bit of a wait.

"It’s the first time the NCAA has ever made the international players be certified through the Clearinghouse prior to summer school, and that’s hard to do," said Williams earlier in the week. "They’ve got to have their I-20s, their final transcript to the Clearinghouse along with all the other documentation, and then they have to be stamped ‘Certified’ in order to receive aid.

"So those guys, Yous graduated on June 11 and Junior graduated on June 10. It’ll be amazing to see how many international players will be enrolled in summer school.  We’re on it, and hopefully a decision will be made soon."

Mbao's case has been made tougher to present for two major reasons: not only does MU have to provide the Clearinghouse with a number of different transcripts, those transcripts also need to be translated before they're passed along to the Clearinghouse because they're coming from Mbao's hometown of Dakar, Senegal.

"We’ve done all the right things, but relative to their final transcripts, which were only posted (recently), that’s hard," Williams said. "And it’s not just our international guys; it’s every Division I international guy. That’s what jams them up. I feel good about Junior. I feel good about Yous. But is Yous going to be here by Sunday night? Depends on how (the process goes)."

Even if Mbao isn't cleared over the weekend, it wouldn't necessarily be a lost cause, according to Williams. But there does remain the possibility the 7-foot-2 freshman won't be able to enroll at MU until the fall semester.

"He could late-enroll, depending upon when it is that they certify him, or he won’t be able to attend summer school," Williams said. "And I would say that there will be a lot of guys that don’t get to go to summer school. The international kids have to do way more than the U.S. kids do to get cleared."

Getting onto campus as early as possible figures to be especially critical for Mbao, an athletically gifted big man who's considered extremely raw and inexperienced. Any extra work he can get -- both on the court and in the classroom -- would be a huge benefit for both he and MU.

Regardless of what happens with Mbao's status for summer school, he still faces an entirely separate issue with the NCAA's Clearinghouse with regard to his status as an amateur. Mbao at one point played on a team overseas on which other players were paid, a situation which could lead to him having to sit out some games next season.

-- According to media relations guru Scott Kuykendall, Jerel McNeal has accepted an invitation to play for the Sacramento Kings in the upcoming NBA Las Vegas Summer League.

McNeal, of course, went undrafted last night after being projected by some to go as high as the early to middle portion of the second round.

I'm still working on trying to find out whether Wesley Matthews and Dominic James will also be playing summer league.

McNeal playing for the Kings summer team is a footnote in a post that in summary is "Mbao and Cadougan might not get to attend summer school due to clearinghouse issues"?

Wonderful.   Our prized PG recruit and 7'2" project are delayed.    This does not exactly help anything.

Standard sure.  But it's a change this year that ends up harming the kids more than anything.  Plus, assuming Mbao gets through the clearinghouse, he still has another hurdle with the committee on amateurism.  He could make it through the clearinghouse with flying colors and still be declared ineligible by the other committee.

I guess Todd could've made a separate announcement, but there's not much info there...

EDIT: From MUAthletics Twitter...

Homer had John Hammond the Bucks GM on his show today. Homer asked specifically about Marquette players the Bucks were looking at. Hammond said he was going to invite DJ to play for the Bucks in Vegas.

Can anyone confirm?

These are the types of hurdles you have to jump over when you explore every path and recruit non-traditional ways. Can't imagine this is a surprise to anyone inside the AL.
