I do not believe this is the case.

If 12 or 13 players know, then assume that the managers, graduate assistants and trainers, their close friends and roomates also know.  That is the way the world works.  This means that potentially dozens would know.

If so, it would take exactly 10 minutes for someone to get it from one of them and post here or Rosiak to find out and post in the paper.

It is impossible to keep something like this a secret with that many people knowing.  Since no one is saying anything, it must be that no one knows for sure.

Yea, I thought about that too... but I'm sure there are SOME things that are kept inside of the team. I mean, we didn't hear about DJ coming back, and while nobody knew for sure if he could play, nobody leaked that he was working out with an outside chance of playing. (that's just one example).

I agree that sometimes stuff gets out, but I have to think that the organization (players, coaches, managers, etc.) is tight enough to keep some stuff private.

Rosiak might actually know, but might have been told off of the record. My guess is that Homer knows as well, but he's basically a MU employee, so you know he's not going to spill it.

No one knew that DJ would play until 12 hours before the game.  That is why it did not leak out.

Yes, everyone tries to keep things private, but that is not how the world works.  These things ALWAYS leak out.  If they do not, most likely it is because no one knows.

If Rosiak knows, I suggest he consider his longterm employment status and start "breaking news."  He has to worry he will not be employed by next bball season.  Will his paper even be publishing next season?  (it was announced today that the Boston Globe will be closing)

I hear you, I guess we will just agree to disagree. I bet there are some things on the team that don't "leak out". I realize that in every business/team information gets out, but I just don't think EVERYTHING gets out, ya know?

As far as Rosiak goes, (I've never worked in the newspaper business, so I don't know for sure) I thought it was common for beat writers close to the team (whether it be pro or college) to keep some things off of the record until an official release came out.

I mean, Rosiak might know, and could break the story... but then MU might not let him into practice anymore (or at games) and then Todd would definitely be out of a job.

Hard to be a beat writer when the school won't let you near the team.

Haven't some people on this board worked in newspaper sports? How does this type of stuff typically work?

Breaking stories is sometimes a choice of personal ethics. Reporters may risk a story break if it means they'll keep their job longer/get paid more/get promoted. News is very cutthroat, and if there is a risk of downsizing or elimination of a print version of the media, a person getting that step up is invaluable. Though with Rosiak he'd be screwed to a wall if he broke a story about the team that he wouldn't be allowed to cover because of it. Though this is a hell of a newsworthy piece (we assume) so I can't see why Rosiak wouldn't report it. just for the sake of his job...maybe.

I agree that the odds on favorite is Liam (granted if it's not him, could you imagine Mbao and him on the court at the same time for the sake of defense? oh man) I tend to think it's not Liam b/c if he can lift then he's not as bad off as we think

My thoughts are
A) Liam (best argument)
b) Cubby (shoulders or pro ball for Hugo)
C) Fulce (knee?)
d) Player getting academic schollie
e) Mo (graduating, I still think I could be considered)

Most likely someone, even the whole team knows.  However, many people knew Hazel would be transferring after the school year.  Most on the the board speculated that he would be leaving based on the fact he couldn't get off the bench.  However, several people knew weeks beforehand that he'd be gone, but it didn't leak.

So I think you're correct that someone always knows.  But perhaps incorrect that it always leaks.

edit: yes, whoops, Hazel.  Long week.  What?  It's only Monday?  Crap!

Burke = Hazel?

There's also the chance that everyone on the team knows what their status for next year is, but doesn't necessarily know who's going to free up the scholarship.

When it's all said and done, I suspect that there will have been far more discussion in speculating how the scholarship will be opened than after the story eventually comes out.

d) Player getting academic schollie

I don't think you can do this--otherwise it would be a common occurrence from teams who want to stockpile players, and it would make option a, b, and c irrelevant.  If you can simply give a rostered player an academic scholarship, why would you even bother debating the alternatives?  Give someone the academic, carry Liam, Cuby and Fulce on the small chance they might make some meaningful contribution, and call it a day.

More likely, MU would have to grant an athletic scholarship in a sport other than basketball--and even then that player wouldn't be allowed to even practice with the team.  He would definitely lose a year of basketball eligibility.

Yes.  Sorry.  Corrected.

bilsu

I am sure no one is transferring or that would have been annouced by now. So that leaves 4 possiblities:
1. One of the seven recruits does not qualify. Do we know who has already qualified?
2. Culliban decides not to comeback.
3. McMorrow is reclassified as a non-player.
4. Fulce is reclassified as a non-player.

Once a player is reclassified as a non-player, I think they are off for good. Therefore, Buzz will only reclassify a player if he needs the scholarship. If everyone shows up, then he will have to choose between Fulce and McMorrow and that will depend on how each of them is doing at that point. Therefore do not expect an annoucement until late August or early September.

RobFro is on academic schollie so I make that deduction that if he can do it...?

though bilsu's idea that one of our players doesn't qualify, it makes perfect sense why I got a new one. Though it'd be a crappy move to pull if we recruited X# of players and decide in august that one of those players will be cut.

The difference is that Frozena wasn't recruited as an athlete.

The NCAA bylaws has a chart on page 190 that defines who counts.  Basically, if you were recruited as an athlete, receive aid, and participate in basketball, you count against scholarship limits.

Bilsu...I HIGHGLY doubt this lasts until August/September.

The coaches know what is happening, and the players involved know whats happening...thats all that matters.

We, as fans, will know in due time.

Also, regarding qualifying...as of now, technically NOBODY is qualifed...as their respective school years are not yet complete.

The reason that I'm confident that Liam McMorrow is not on the brink of death as is so commonly assumed is twofold. First, he has been working out with the team in the structured small group workouts as per NCAA summer-guidelines. Secondly, I talked to him at the gym where he then proceeded to put himself through a vigorous workout. If he had a heart condition that would threaten his career I'd be willing to bet he doesn't have the green light to strain his system away from the watchful eyes of team physicians and trainers.

If he's "voted off the island" it won't be because of his health.

It was Buzz that said in the beginning (and the last official word we got on the matter) that McMorrow had a career threatening health condition.  That's the last we heard.  Not that it was his heart or anything else, just that it was career threatening.  Until I hear otherwise from a reputable source (no offense, but you are a stranger posting on the Internet ;p) I'm going to continue to assume that the issue hasn't been resolved, otherwise someone would have made a statement to quash the rumors.

jficke13

One time honored PR ploy to maintain public interest is to pique people's imaginations and then give them no way of resolving the mystery. Watch Lost if you want an example.
