Bob Hurley on CBS Sunday Morning

Saw it. Kept waiting for a reason to hate the guy, but couldn't find one. I think the Knight comparison is apt in terms of on-court (or sidelines) demeanor, but he seems like a genuninely good guy who has his players' best interests at heart.

I'm willing to wager that the MU fans who have hated on Hurley over the last year are predominately midwest born-and-raised who don't know much about Hurley or St. Anthony's except for slight name recognition and a recruit now and again.

Hurley is a legend (    ) , he really is at his level.  That being said, he did MU no favors in that entire TT episode.  Why he continues to hammer at MU I don't know.

He is beyond doubt a great coach but watching that segment today made me think too much of Knight. I would never want either of my sons playing for someone who verbally abuses his players. There are other ways of getting  across to 15-year-olds than calling them "dumbass." Preparing them for life is one thing; taking away the joy of the game is something else.

Yeah, I was waiting to hate him in the story.  And I suppose that was what I meant about the Knight reference - rough on the outsidem always yelling, but when you get to it, he has the kid's best interests in mind (maybe more so than Knight).  

And he doesn't mention anything about MU.  Just mentions in the story DePaul - Rashon Burno went there, and Duke - his sons went there.

To my knowledge he's never physically or verbally threatened a woman, thrown an all out temper-tantrums on the court, ripped apart a hotel while representing the US, shot a person or hit a kid.

I wasn't thrilled with Hurley after the whole Taylor thing last year, but his story and track record are pretty amazing. There's a great book, "Miracle at St. Anthony's" that chronicles a season at St Anthony's. It is amazing what he has accomplished in terms of giving kids an opportunity they may not have otherwise had. I highly recommend the book. If I'm not mistaken they may be making a movie based on the book.

Regardless of how you feel toward TC, you've got to give him his props for the way he nurtured a relationship with Coach Hurley, and sold himself as a coach Hurley could trust sending his kids to play for.  TC offers Dwight B. a scholarship, followed the next year by one to Cubie, thereby demonstrating that Hurley's kids will be in good hands academically, as well as athletically out in the Milwaukee boonies.  This "investment" in marginal BE kids paid off when Tyshawn T signed an LOI with MU last year. Unfortunately, the story didn't end as happily for us as it might have.

+1 .  Hurley is big time, and it would not hurt to have a good relationship with him.  Buzz will continue to improve, and earn respect from lots of HS coaches out there, I am confident.

Bob Hurley is the coach at St. Anthony's. Danny Hurley is the coach at St. Benedict's. Both Burke and Cubillan played at St. Benedict's under Danny Hurley.

To be honest, I can't fault Hurley for Pushing TT away from an unproven coach (Buzz) and toward an established coach (Self). 

Question is how does Hurley NOW feel about Buzz given the way Buzz handled the TT situation and his coaching record one-year later. 

I always thought that Buzz must have known TT was a lost cause.  But, if Buzz handled things with class and was able to have a legit reason to interact with Hurley, he would get on Hurley's radar and maybe fast-track himself to one of his kids in the future.  Without the meeting, Buzz is just another college coach out in the boondocks with no interaction with arguable the greatest high school coach ever.  It was a smart move by Buzz.

I have no problem with Hurley doing what is best for his players.

I have a big problem with Hurley taking shots at MU for no reason.  MU provided releases to all who asked.  MU did not "hold up" Taylor's release.  If Taylor's parents (instead of Coach Hurley) had signed the release it would have been granted like all the others.  For a guy who has been around for ever I was amazed how he could not read the directions of the release form.
