First, Marquette in the last minute burns up the entire shot clock and then tosses up a no-percentage three-point shot. Was that the plan?

Then, Lazar Hayward, an otherwise outstanding player, makes a fifth-grade mistake by not knowing that he had stepped over the baseline when inbounding the ball.

We could not have done more at the end to help Missouri win the game.

Shades of 1971...Ohio State...listed by USA Today as one of the greatest 63 games in NCAA Tournament History

Allie McGuire did the same thing when I was a freshman at Marquette.   It hurt then too....damn.

46. 1971 Mideast Regional Semifinals (Ohio State 60, Marquette 59)

Marquette, undefeated entering the tourney (26-0), lost after the Warriors' playmaker, unanimous first-team All-America Dean "The Dream" Meminger, fouled out with five minutes remaining. Teammate Allie McGuire, the coach's son, committed a costly turnover in the closing seconds before Buckeyes guard Allan Hornyak converted a pair of crucial free throws to end Marquette's 39-game winning streak.

Shame that that is the game highlight that is being shown on TV

Sure those were big plays but the real story of the last 5-6 minutes and the reason Marquette did not basically run away and hide was that they got second chance points after second chance points.  Mu would score mizzou would miss but then collect the loose rebound and score right back.  Including the biggie of Lyons 3 point play

I don't think that was the plan.  Missouri did a great job denying Matthews and McNeal.  Butler should have driven to the hoop before he dumped off to Acker, who in turn dumped it back to Butler.

Of course Hayward knows the rule.  He went to make a pass and pulled back when he thought Missouri had it covered.  Unfortunate, but I think Missouri won the game more at the end than we lost it.

The plan was to get the ball to Wesley or Jarel.  The plan was disrupted by good defense by Mizzou not allowing us to run the plan we wanted.

Credit Mizzou with a good defensive play.  Not all our misplays are becuase we have a first year coach.  Sometimes the other team actually plays well.

That big 3 point play was a result of Carroll pulling Jimmy away from the rebound.  Watch the replay it is very obvious and the ref had a clear view of the play.  That single play changed the outcome of the game more than any other play.  5 pont swing in the final minute is hard to overcome

I also saw that on the replay. So frustrating.

I have a MUCH bigger problem with the ticky-tack foul they called on Acker when we were up w/over a minute left.

THey hadn't made a call like that all game. It was horrific.

But yes....I too was screaming as you watched the Mizzou guy pulling Butler's jersey off his body.

great observation....that was a gift. and let's face it -- MU got every loose ball in the 2H until Lyons got lucky on that odd bounce that resulted in his three point play.  so close.

lab_warrior

That last possession should count for two mistakes alone.  Just AWFUL.  I would rather Acker try to force it to Matthews in the post than pull out, get it to Butler and chuck that horrendous forced 3 airball.  Also, we were in the bonus...refresh my memory, but you go get FTs when you get fouled attacking the rim there?!

DaCoach

Just as in the Nova game, we let the clock run down and ended up with terrible shots. There is no reason to run the clock down when the game is within a bucket. It allows the defense to apply pressure only for 8-10 seconds rather than 20+. Both games also were lost to layups off missed assignments.

But in the end, this has been a remarkably entertaining team. Congratulations to the heart within the players who never gave up. Let's hope next year's team shows the same character these guys did. And Buzz, review the films and give us some sense of organization at crunch time.

It wasn't on the rebound, it was on the three point play at 78-76.  Butler had position to stop the putback and was pulled away by the jersey by Carroll.  An obvious intentional foul, but I think the ref's view was blocked.

It was on both the rebound and the 3 point play.  The ref was not blocked at all as he was in the same line as the TV camera.

ya seriously. here's a link to highlights from the game. look at 7:33 for this play. such b.s. i didn't really notice it when it happened but it was so obviously a foul and happened right in front of the ref. really sucks.
