Korey Spates did choose Purdue after DJ chose MU.  He got kicked out of Purdue, went the JUCO route and was headed to Kent State, but they pulled the offer.  He ended up at D2 Valdosta State, but I don't think he's there anymore.

While MU was a leader for Spates at one point, he was not the back up plan to DJ.  MU was no longer his leader even before DJ committed, Crean had moved on to Tony Freeman who ended up being a pretty good player at Iowa and is now at Southern Illinois after having some disagreements with Todd Lickliter.
