Nova Tiebreaker?
« on: February 23, 2009, 02:15:23 PM »
Couldn't find a thread with a working link to big east tiebreakers...

If we pick up 2 of our last 4, and Nova wins out (both seem to be reasonably probable) leaving us each 14-4, what's the next tiebreaker for us and Nova for the BE tourney since we're 1-1 head to head this season?

I'm pretty sure it would be the record against the Top 2 teams

TWO-WAY TIE
1. Regular season head-to-head results (one or two games). If the tied teams split their two games, then
proceed to Step 2 below.
2. Each team’s record vs. the team or tied teams occupying the highest position in the standings. Continue
down through the standings until one team gains an advantage.

If we tie at 14-4, the Tie Breaker will be determined by the order of finish of the top 3 finishers.  (Assuming all finish at 15-3 or better, which for this thread we'll assume they do)

When head-to-head does not settle the standings, the tie breaker is determined by the best team beaten.  Villanova has a win over Pitt. Meaning if 1 of our 2 wins is against Pitt... MU will win the tie-breaker.  Under any scenario..a win over UConn, UL, or Syracuse we gain the edge as the tie-breaker will only fall to the record against WVU.  (MU 1-0 vs VU 0-1)

If MU loses to Pitt, but wins 2 other games the tie-breaker will be determined by who wins the Big East.  If we beat one of the teams that finishes above Pitt we win, if not we lose.

Ok now THAT could get interesting.  Nova beat Pitt, lost to UConn.  We have yet to play each.  Our seed could depend on the UConn v. Pitt game at the end of the season if we beat UConn on Wednesday.

Although, the only difference between the #4 and #5 seed is we will have to beat Gtown or Seton Hall to get the chance to play Nova.  Still, I'd like that #4.

The biggest difference will be tired legs.  A MU-VU game will be a track meet, better to have an extra day of rest going in.

OK.  Let's say we beat UCONN to give them three losses, then lose to Pitt and Louisville, and finish with a win against Syracuse.  14-4 and tied with Villanova.  UCONN turns around and beats Pitt.  Louisville drops one at WV, and all three teams tie for first place at 15-3.  What is the tie breaker then, win-loss record vs. the combined first place teams?

In this hypothetical situation MU would be 1-2 against the first place teams and Villanova would also be 1-2.  So it comes back to West Virginia again.

5 top 10 teams battling it out for first place and the four top spots in the last 4 weeks of the conference season . . . ridiculous!

If we beat Uconn, we do not have to worry about Villanova. Uconn does. It seems reasonable to expect Uconn to lose at Pitt. So if we beat Uconn and Syracuse and Uconn losses to us and Pitt then both Uconn and MU finish 14-4 and we would own the tie breaker with Uconn. Winning Wednesday is the key.

That is my favorite senario.  In a 3 way tie for 3rd at 14-4 Nova drops to 5th due to the mini conference and We trump UCONN (after the mini) by head to head.  We end up 3rd avoiding Pitt till the final, and draw Louisville (only fair on a neutral court) in the semis.  got to beat UCONN.

In this scenario we are 2-1, UConn 1-1, Villanova is 1-2.  Anyone want to confirm that mini-conference is decided on winning percentage even if UConn played fewer games?
