How the last 5 games will play out?
« on: February 19, 2009, 04:02:44 PM »
MU should finish with no less than 13 wins and most like 14 with an chance at 15 games.

GT- Likely Win  (GT has lost it's way 1-4 in last 5 games)

UConn- toss-up  (only because it is at the BC, no disrespect to UCONN, they are a great team, but the crowd and MU will be fired up to the max.)

Louisville- possible win (LU struggles when their press is not working and it will not work against MU)

Pitt-Likely Loss  (tough team and arguably toughest venue)

Syracuse-Likely win (2 words- Senior Night)

Villanova still has 6 games left Home vs Rut, GT & Prov  Away @ Syr, Depaul & ND.  They will lose at least 2 of these game and that will give them 6 loses in the BE for sure.

MU is almost assured of a Top 4 finish and a double-bye at the BET.

My predictions for the final standings in BE regular season:

1) Pitt 16-2 (Wins out)
2) MU 14-4 (3-2 Wins GT, (UConn or LU) & Syr)
3) UConn  14-4 (4 games left 2-2 lose @ MU and Pitt)
4) LU  14-4 (5 games left 3-2 will lose 2 our out of the following MU, WV or Cinn)

The tie-breaker rules are a little confusing, but if I have it right under the above scenarios, then MU would get the second seed.

The bottom line it is hard to see a scenario where MU plays before Thursday in the BET.

Hopefully the big guy can read teal.  Otherwise the father Kelly thread may doom us...

I think we beat Gtown.  I really really really hope we beat UConn. I think we'll beat Cuse as well. I would love to see MU extend a home winning streak into the 09-10 season, likely 2010.

I think we'll lose to Pitt. I think we'll lose to the Lou as well. However I think if we lose to UConn, we'll beat UL.

I guess I come to the same conclusion, but a different means to get there.

Disagree that its a given MU will have a top 4 seed. Nova pretty much owns the tiebreaker against us given their victory over Pitt (and Pitts victory over UCONN) if we lose as Vegas expects to Pitt.
These are Nova's games remaining.
February 19   Rutgers
February 22   at No. 25 Syracuse
February 25   at DePaul
February 28   Georgetown
March 2   at Notre Dame
March 5   Providence

Its very easy to see them go 5-1 and finish at 13-5. We would need to be 14-4 (going 3-2 over the last 5) to get the 4 seed.

A little off topic, but, did anyone read the Preview for the Duke/St. Johns game at ESPN: http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/preview?gameId=290502599.

Here is a sample: "The ninth-ranked Blue Devils, coming off two straight ACC losses, look to win their sixth straight against the lowly Red Storm..."

I mean, I am obviously not a St. John's fan, but come on...  It is probably just because they are playing Duke.

I really hope the "Lowly Red Storm" crushes the Lordly Blue Devils.

I agree with dw3.   Nova has a much easier path to 13-5 than we do and once there we likely lose the tie break.  If we could win at Georgetown tomorrow (a game which we are not favored in) I'd feel much better.  Then a win against Syr and one of the big 3 would make it very tough for Nova to catch us.

I agree with the last post. It is hard to assume we are going to beat G-Town. They need another good win to get them into the tourney and their home crowd is going to be rocking. We don't have any experience going into D.C. a favorite, so lets not get a big head. Ask UCONN if G-town is a good team.

We will have to be at our best to win these upcoming games - each and every one offers challenges for us.  I'd be thrilled if we win 3.  That said, I want to win them all :)

GT- Likely Win  (GT has lost it's way 1-4 in last 5 games)

This is far from a 'likely win'.  In fact, wouldn't be surprised if we're underdogs for this game.  G'Town is playing for their tournament lives, and pose a real mismatch for us.

This game scares the bajesus outta me.

Georgetown also won at SF yesturday 65-40. We lost there by one.
I be happy if we win 2 out of the 5. 3 would be fantastic.

So far so good.

I am sorry more of the individuals that responded to my post did not have the same "faith" that I did that the GT was a likely win.  GT played as well as it could in the first half and was only able to manage to be tied with MU.

Wednesday night will be just an awesome atomsphere.....
