On McNeal for Defensive POY:

"Marquette's Jerel McNeal has been among the best steals guys in the country, but is a very good on-ball defender as well."

On MU in general:

"• Marquette may need to be called "Team Purell." Before each workout, coach Buzz Williams has the team huddle around the midcourt circle and each player holds out his hands. Williams then puts a dollop of Purell sanitizing gel in each player's hands. Marquette has had some flu and other illnesses go through the team at different times, and better sanitary practices were worth a try. I think it's safe to say Marquette runs a "clean program."

• I have not seen a tougher group of guards than Marquette's Jerel McNeal, Wesley Matthews and Dominic James. That is one talented, hardworking and competitive trio, and it is a pleasure to have watched them grow up together in the game and mature as winners. One player who is too often left out of the discussion is forward Lazar Hayward. While technically not a guard, Hayward is just as tough and talented, and just as important of a piece in MU's winning puzzle.

• Marquette can really get down and guard you on the perimeter. James is a really good on-ball defender and McNeal is as good off the ball as any defender in the nation. The Golden Eagles use quickness, strength and grit to get up underneath a ball handler, and they are almost always right up on you on the catch. The Eagles may not have an inside presence or depth, but the perimeter is really strong. "
"I don't give a damn if he can't do nothing else. He can shoot, and I love the way he shoots. I don't care if he can't dribble, can't rebound, can't play defense... that kid can shoot the ball." - Tracy McGrady on Steve Novak
