I have read and heard the argument that Marquette is not as good as our record because we have not played anyone in the conference yet.  We have only played one game against the teams with winning records.  I wanted to see how we compared to the rest of the conference on record against the teams with winning records, even records and losing records.  The following is the table with the answer:

                                      Against                     Against                     Against

Teams with               Teams with               Teams with

                                     Winning                       Even                        Losing

                                 Conference              Conference                 Conference
                                     Record                        Record                   Record

                                              Winning Record Teams

1 Marquette #8                1-0                        2-0                           4-0

2 Louisville #7                  2-0                       1-0                           3-0

3 Connecticut #2             0-0                        2-0                           5-1

4 Pittsburgh #3                1-1                       1-0                            4-0

5 Providence                   0-1                        0-0                           5-1

6 Syracuse #15               0-2                       0-0                            5-1

                                                Even Record Teams

7 Villanova #21               0-3                        0-0                           3-0

8 West Virginia               0-3                        0-0                           3-0

                                                     Losing Record Teams

9 Georgetown #23         3-1                         0-1                          0-2

10 Cincinnati                   0-4                        0-0                          3-0

11 Notre Dame #22       0-4                        0-0                          3-1

12 St. John's                   0-3                         0-1                          2-1

13 South Florida             0-3                        0-2                           2-0

14 Seton Hall                  0-3                         0-2                          1-1

15 Rutgers                      0-5                         0-0                          0-2

16 DePaul                       0-3                         0-0                          0-4

At this point of the season, I think the argument of not playing many games against the teams with a winning record can be said about any of the teams with winning records.  That is why they have winning records.  I did find that Georgetown has had pretty good success against the winning teams in the conference with 3 wins for that category.

I leave this information to others to comment on and tell me I don't know what I am talking about.  I probably don't, but I feel comfortable about whom we have played and that we are currently just taking care of business in the conference.  It also made me a little more concerned about the game against Georgetown this weekend.  It appears that while they have lost games they shouldn't have they are pretty successful against the top of the conference.

I have no additional insight to add - but I did want to say thanks for the analysis.  Good stuff.  Looks like we're doing what we need to - and that is - winning!

Very cool analysis.  I was wondering the same thing.

Georgetown sticks out like a sore thumb.

Here's hoping you update the chart every week!

Great analysis. Makes me think the experts/commentators out there are latching on to what appears to be an easy argument without digging beyond the surface.

The most interesting part of it all to me is how, to date, the high echelon teams are taking care of business (other than GTown) against the middle of the road teams in the conference. I would've expected a bigger bunch in the middle winning some and losing some, but good teams like Nova, WVU and ND are getting skunked by the elite teams and putting themselves in a big hole.

Also, I haven't heard that UConn hasn't beaten anyone in conference. What's up with that??
