George Thompson's record of 1773 points should fall in about 5 games. McNeal at 1652 and James at 1648.

NavinRJohnson

It is entirely possible, that McNeal ends up first all-time in scoring and steals, with James quite possibly second in both scoring and assists. Not a gimmie by any means, but that would really be something.

chapman

Perhaps the announcers of every game can stop talking about how James will likely finish as the all-time leading scorer, now that McNeal has passed him...

muwarrior69

Not to throw cold water on their accomplishment, but Geroge set the record in 3 seasons, not 4, with no 3 pt baskets.

NavinRJohnson

That's why I find it so incredible that record has held up as long as it has.

reinko

I hope Thompson doesn't find it offensive that someone is breaking his scoring record.

All records are made to be broken.

He showed enthusiasm a few years ago when Diener was on his way to breaking the record. With Crean gone, it would be a nice move if Buzz got Thompson involved down the stretch here with his record falling.

THEGYMBAR

The record lasting all these years is simply amazing. Brute Force was an unreal player and while he may not be #1 for long it does not diminish his place in MU history. He was a joy to watch.

My comment was a veiled response to when GT got a little hot under the collar about his jersey #.

You cannot compare a 3 year accomplishment to a 4 year 30 game a season player.

GT is still the leader in my book.
You heard it here first. Davante Gardner will be a Beast this year.

DJ is not even on the same planet as far as assists to Tony Miller!

OK. And?

4everwarriors

I'd argue that George not only put MU on the basketball map, but was more valuble than Jerel and James combined. Too bad Crean chose to bitch-slap Brute Force and pee on a Warrior icon.

As he should be.  The whole "we don't retire numbers, we retire jerseys" is seriously retarded.

You don't have much choice if you are a program that is long running and has a history of success.  You either retire nothing, or do the jersey.

MR.HAYWARD

dont go there or Dodds will rededicate his entire board and about 3 weeks to defending Crean and trying to convince eveyone that Mu is about to run out of numbers.

Just doesnt pass the smell test does it?

There are 100 possible numbers that a player can wear.  I doubt we are in serious trouble of running out.

edit: Actually there are 101...0 and 00 are distinctive numbers.

I believe that players can only have numbers that include the digits 0 - 5 so that ref's can signal to the scorer who a foul is on with one hand.  i.e. a player can be 45, but not 46.

Is that *still* the case?  Jeez, I know they still have that at the high school level, but even youth teams are allowed didgits greater than 5.  That's still 61 numbers though.  And we've retired something like 10 right?

I think we're OK.

Is that only a rule in college?

Perhaps an asterisk is in order?  ;)

Not to diminish Thompson's accomplishments, but the truth is that had Dwyane Wade played more than two seasons, the record would have fallen five years ago. Same thing if not for Travis Diener's tackling dummy issues.

How did you come up with 61.  I am coming up with 31 (00, 0-5, 10-15, 20-25, 30-35, 40-45, 50-55).

I think doing it either way is fine as long as it is a clearly stated policy (ie-I think UNC only retires jerseys not numbers).
