Announced today:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Providence College will beef up security at its men's basketball games after the brother of a player walked onto the court to confront a referee last weekend.

The college said Wednesday that uniformed Providence police officers will be positioned near team benches during games at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. More security guards also will be used.

The announcement came four days after Jonathan Xavier, the brother of Providence guard Jeff Xavier, came onto the court during the second half of Saturday's game against Marquette. He was upset no foul was called after his brother was scraped in the face.

Providence athletic director Bob Driscoll said the college was disappointed and embarrassed by the incident. Marquette won the game 91-82.

the beef up in security consisted of adding one additional police officer and two additional security personnel.  no incidents were reported.

From today's Providence Journal, Jonathan Xavier will be arraigned next Tuesday after being charged with one count of disorderly conduct.  Xavier is on probation for a drug conviction.

Per Bob Driscoll, PC AD, " We were disappointed and embarrassed about the situation that occurred when the fan entered the court during our men's basketball game versus Marquette on Saturday."

"The safety of the student-athletes, coaches, officials and fans is a top priority for us."
