Ask Marquette University to End Cruel Classroom Experiments

After receiving a complaint from a concerned student, PETA has learned that Marquette University requires students in its experimental physiology class to conduct cruel experiments on the nerves, muscles, hearts, and other organs of rats, frogs, and turtles.

The instructors bash turtles in the head with hammers. Students operate on rats and then kill them and destroy frogs' brains by sticking a pin through the animals' skulls (a process called "pithing"). The frogs are then dissected while their hearts are still beating.

For example, a laboratory worksheet distributed in the Marquette course states that "[a] red-eared slider turtle (Trachemys scripta) is anesthetized and then killed by a hard hammer blow to the head, followed by pithing of the brain." A hole is then sawed into the turtle's shell so that students can observe the animal's heart beat. According to the student who contacted PETA, one turtle, after receiving a hammer blow to the head, apparently attempted to walk and coughed up blood.

There are many humane, non-animal methods that have been proven to teach anatomy and physiology as well as or better than the use of rats, frogs, and turtles in these kinds of cruel exercises.

PETA has already asked Marquette to replace these outdated experiments with a humane curriculum, but we have yet to receive any assurances from Marquette that this will take place. We're now calling on you to help end these cruel classroom experiments. Please contact Marquette University's Dr. Margaret Bloom, vice provost for undergraduate programs and teaching, and politely ask that the university end these experiments and implement humane, non-animal teaching methods in its science courses.

Peta sucks. They are insane. Did you hear that they wanted Ben and Jerry's to use nursing mothers milk to make ice cream instead of cows milk? These people are out of their minds. I guess thats to be expected when Pam Anderson is the spokeswomen of your organization.

if you want to make an omlette you have to break a few eggs.

I suppose PETA supporters who will undergo surgery in the future would feel confident only using doctors that were trained on software...

I can't remember what year it was, possibly my sophomore year, but the College Republicans put on  BBQ for Animal Rights...man, that was some good stuff.

Skatastrophy

PETA can come on up to Milwaukee and have all the nekkid protests they want this week.

Of course they will quickly freeze to death in our sub-zero temperatures.  It's a small price to pay since they seem to value animal life over human life.

I suggest you all watch Red Eye, a show on Fox News Channel.  You can frequently hear my incredible writing on it.  Anyway, from a recent show:

So in Bangor Maine last week, two extremely hot girls in tiny yellow bikinis protested outside a KFC in the snow. Their names were Ashley and Krissy, and according to PETA, they're actual members of the group.

Yeah. I guarantee that if you were to hit any PETA meeting, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone remotely like Ashley or Krissy. With the exception of Pam Anderson, who, by the by, is not so much aging as she is rusting, most animal rights activists aren't hot. Or particularly social. Fact is, their connection to animals is usually based on their alienation from humans.

PETA apparently was protesting KFC because, get this, when you fry chicken, it's not good for the chickens. The press eats this stuff up because they love anything involving half naked chicks. And so do I.

But there's a strategy behind these stunts. See, PETA hopes that the press overlooks the poisonous bedrock of animal rights: that a human is worth no more than a rat.

Even a hot one.

Which is why PETA would gladly risk a bimbo getting pneumonia if it means getting a byline. But maybe they think that's the only way to get average guys involved in animal rights.

They're half right. Men will always enjoy looking at a hot chick in bikini, but it's not the stomach that's making that decision. Which is why there's always a free buffet at strip clubs.

And if you disagree with me, then you sir are worse than Hitler.

The portal is NOT closed.

+1

Like many things in life, this can all be summed up in a great South Park episode.

And I've seen Red Eye a few times and have enjoyed it.

I stopped right there.

It all makes so much sense now, did you read his "incredible writing" in the NFC column?  Loads of superlatives is what it takes to get on that channel.

Most of the PETA folks I've seen.......I would cringe at the thought of them being naked.

When I think of what people in PETA look like I think of this.

on average maybe but I know quite a few hefty vegetarians on Marquette's campus right now.  And when you include the likes of Christina Applegate and Eva Mendes, of course you can make that claim.

Not to get overly political here, but if you click on the links for the other campaigns, but they have an ongoing campaign as well against the March of Dimes.

I really hope PETA comes to Marquette to protest so I can get in their face and ask why they're willing to let babies die for their agenda.

College Republicans did this again this year on the day as the real animal rights booth went up

Yeah, I was a junior in 2003 when we came up with the idea for it.  They've been doing it every year since.  Heck, they even got Sobelman's burgers one year too.

I hate peta, but there is no way that vegitarians on avg aren't thiner than their meat eating coutner parts.

I wasn't really getting at the thin thing, it had more to do with the other items that I typically associate with some of these folks, and yes many of them are out here in our neck of the woods.

MUSig54

Wow. I took that class at MU, and it was a lot of fun. The prof complained about PETA a few classes and made fun of them for being to uptight. The class itself was amazingly informative, probably the best I did in a science class at MU. Everything was done humanely as possible as well. And there is no way in hell that you could learn as much in a computer simulation than with real animals.

Some of the stuff we did was take frog's legs and hook them up to computer electrode thingies (it's been a while since I've taken the class) and tested the range of voltage the muscles twitched at. We also got to perform surgery on live rats, and they were expected to survive, and if you didn't do anything dumb, they did.
