RPI Question

Stupid question but what does it mean and how is it created.  I ask this because I was cruising the net and I looked at CBS's polls.

I am really confused. Marquette is ranked 22 while Wisconsin is 11.  Wisconsin is ranked above two teams that beat them, us and Texas.  AND they have not beat anyone near the top of its very own poll.  Does anyone have any clue how they come up with these numbers?

Also, I think SOS means strength of schedule and we are not rated well in that category either which I find unbelievable.  We play in the big east and our non conference was decent (TN WI and Dayton, all in the top 35)  The numbers don't make sense and I was wondering if anyone here can make some sense out of them.

Don't quote me on this but I believe it is:

25% Marquette's winning percentage
50% Opponent's winning percentage
25% Opponent's opponent's winning percentage

However:

Home wins or road losses are multiplied by 0.6
Home losses or road wins are multiplied by 1.4
Neutral court games count as 1.0

Also games against DII schools don't count.

One point worth considering is that the RPI only includes games already played.  Thus, we don't have teams like #1 (RPI) Pitt, #7 UConn, #12 Georgetown, #13 Syracuse in our record.    We have #76 Cincinnati, #140 Rutgers, #32 Villanova and #19 WVU.

Second, while TN, WI and Dayton are all in the top 35, Houston Baptist is 278, Texas Southern is 303, IPFW is 217, Central Michigan is 276, and Chicago State is 206.

Our SOS will improve as the season progresses.

Keep in mind the RPI only factors in games you've actually played thus far.  Since we've played teams that are 2-11 in the Big East including a Rutgers team that has some pretty bad losses on their ledger, it affects our rating.  Houston Baptist is 1-16 and Texas Southern is 1-15....that also hurts us.  MU has played two teams in the 300's and another three teams in the 200's (including one that is in the 290's).

Don't worry, the SOS will end up being very strong and as long as MU beats the teams they are supposed to, then we'll be fine.

Wisconsin had not played one team in the 300's and only one team in the 200's.  That's why they are ranked higher, their schedule has been tougher than MU's thus far.

50% own winning percentage
25% of opponents winning percentage.

MU is continually hurt by our buy games being very, very weak.  Houston Baptist has won one game and the RPI is somewhere in the neighborhood of 300.

Take the square root of victories divided by the reciprocal of opponent's winning percentage and multiply by number of banners flying in the arena minus number of new state attendance records set. Now subtract the average number of deflections/game and that will, without a doubt, give you the RPI and SOS.
