Why cant we get some big Farm Boy like Harengody from Wisconsin?  Does Bucky have a monopoly on these kids? We need the next Mcllvaine or Lovette.

Found this cool app for stats on former mu players - goes back to 1996

Why does it matter? I'll take the next best big man from Rhode Island if need be.

Most kids outside of Milwaukee and even a large percentage in Milwaukee are raised Badger fans regardless of where/if their parents went to college and they grow up dreaming about playing for Wisconsin.  The only way to get them to look at MU is if Wisconsin is just awful, or the coach is terrible.  When MU got McIlvaine and Lovette, both of those were true.  Wisconsin was awful when McIlvaine was in high school, and Steve Yoder was a terrible recruiter.  They were better when Lovette's recruitment was going on, but they never went after him because of Stu Jackson's issues and the coaching change.  His final two were MU and UWGB.

Now that they are consistently good, it's tougher.  Throw in the fact that they have a Wisconsin sports legend as a coach, and getting a big farmboy isn't in our favor.

Tough to overcome all of the Badger sweatshirts and t-shirts and bumber stickers and license plates and commercials and billboards that a young man sees 24/7 when living in Wiscy.   He sees the great Bo Ryan everywhere.  His dad tells him heroic stories.  Then the legend comes and tells him how he has a chance to play against all of the other B10 schools that have lived in this young man's personal mythology since he was old enough to care.    Then, that OTHER school, that little Catholic one in the ghetto of Milwaukee that plays teams from far away, comes and makes a pitch, but it is literally 10 years too late.   All this kid has ever wanted to do is represent his state and his university.    The kid contemplates, but in the end, he wants to help the great state of Wisconsin.    Seeya, Keaton.   Seeya Evan.    Seeya, Brian.

I always liked Al's philosophy: Take three of four Wisconsin kids to keep the local alumni happy, then go out and recruit the studs you need to be competitive year after year.

I grew up in Wisky, and I could care less where we recruit from.  It's not the state is some hidden jewel of basketball talent.

The Lens

The bigger question is why couldn't we get Harangody?

+ whatever the maximum number of +++ allowed.

I too am a Wisconsin native and couldn't care less about where our players are from.

Of course Bo's system had something to do with it, but when has a 4 or 5 star big man from Wisconsin lived up to expectations?  Butch might be the only McDonald's All-American ever to be redshirted and wasn't good until his 5th year.  Greg Stiemsma was a top 50 recruit who averaged 11 minutes and 3.5 ppg his senior year.  As someone said, Nankivil is looking like Burke right now, and looked like Hazel did last season (watching from the bench).  J.P. Gavinski-might be hurt or something, but for a supposedly talented big man, it would be accurate to say Robert Frozena has contributed more to our team that he has to the Badgers over the past two seasons.  When you look outside the state, you see a few more examples, along with some you could chalk up as successful recruits.  Bottom line is if we want to recruit a decent bench player, we can try to fight Bo for him, but it's hardly worth it.

I loved my time in Wisconsin and go back there at least three times a year, but let's face it, a state all-star team would be destroyed by the better high school teams in Houston, New York, Chicago, Detroit, etc.

CAINMUTINY

Honestly, what does it matter where we get the talent? The last decent big we had was from Senegal and turned out to be the most popular player in recent memory.  Its a big world out there Wisconsinites and it would be nice to see you embrace a standard of excellence by finding talent where ever it may be.

Welcome Diener, Novak, Maymon, and to a lesser extent Chritopherson (co-Mr. Basketball WI, in case anyone forgot, but he won't be missed)

we have consistantly gotten the best player in the state save a few exceptions... and the ones we missed out on, I can't say that I regret them not coming.

Players go to UW to win games... Ballers come to MU to go pro.

just let that sink in a minute.

I think there is a rule that all big ugly white guys from Wisconsin have to go to Madison.

This makes the most sense to me.  However, my point is that of course I would welcome studs from across the county (maybe not Rhode Island), but we have not recruited a reliable big man yet outside of the Ooze. Which makes me believe that a big Greg Stiesma (sp?) may have helped this year.

Would you like a Steisma rather than this lot:
Kinsella
Lott
Trend Blackledge (6'8" 185?)
Amo
wont name present players.

J.P. Gavinski isn't hurt.  He just sucks.

He must if he's played 5 minutes all year.

I think any of those former MU players would have helped this year.  Stiemsma in his senior year would be preferable to all those, but before that was just as inadequate as any other on that list.  I can only imagine the outcry here if we recruited a top 50 big that took four years to develop into just a serviceable bench player.

I think in the absence of Butch, Stiemsma would have been quite good.  In relation to Ooze, I bet he could have averages 10/6 at MU.

Doesn't Kyle kelm have an offer on the table?

Kyle Kelm is a 6'9" power forward type.  My guess is that offer quietly goes away.

Are you saying Bo is running him off? Didn't think Bo would do such a thing. Then again, he's offering high school sophomores and certain posters on BadgerNation said Bo wouldn't do that, either.

The Gavinski Kid must be in the doghouse or hurt.  He has only played one game this year? Wonder if he has a good hockey game?

One has to question player development at Wisconsin. Nankivil was supposed to be better than Wilt (right murf?)
Gavinski was a 3 star recruit and the 28th best center in his class.
Butch was a McD's all american and produced only slightly better than Ooze.

Not from Rhode Island?  Ever hear of Ernie DeGregorio, Marvin Barnes and most recently Eric Murphy?

I think you are right about the ugly white kid to Wisky rule!!

There have not been too may big kids that were high D1 coming out of high school, that I remember.

I believe Lovette was progressing well, but then he ran into personal issues his Junior year, as I recall.

The last fairly good big kid we did get out of Wisconsin was Merrit, unless you want to call Novak at 6'9" a big kid.

Come to think of it, MU has done pretty well recruiting the worthwhile big kids out of Wisconsin.

Does anybody remember the alleged stud, Roman Mueller from Wisc. Dells, I believe?
